The notes in my imported musicXML score are extremely crowded with 5 bars per system, so I’m trying use layout options/casting off/Fixed number of Bars per System to “4”, but when I apply and close, the score has not changed. Does anyone know what would prevent this change from taking place?
Welcome to the forum @Pila – it sounds like you might have imported your XML with the system formatting (ie system and frame breaks), meaning there will be explicit system/frame breaks set on every system.
See here for how to reset the layout, to remove all these manual breaks and allow your casting off settings to take effect:
(PS when importing XML, try deactivating a lot of the options on the MusicXML Import page in Preferences, to allow Dorico to take over more attributes of your music.)

Lillie, Resetting layout (under locked layout) worked! Thank you very much. For some reason, now my playback stopped working, but that will be a separate topic, I guess.
