Flipping the key of D#m to Ebm in transposed instruments

I’m working on a piece in concert C#m which I prefer for concert instruments over Dbm. But want my transposed Tenor Sax and Trumpet parts in Ebm. Is there a way to automatically do this without having to manually flip every note?

Definitely!

I saw this earlier. The problem is, Ebm is 6 flats, D#m is 6 sharps. So checking this box doesn’t do anything as there’s no advantage other than preference.

Unless of course I’m doing it wrong! Which is very possible…

Gotcha. I wasn’t stopping long enough to thing about the 6/6 split in that case.

I know this is possible, though. Let me review (which will help me) and get back to you soon…

Okay, I’ve got a partial solution. (Meaning this is probably not what you’ll want to use, but here goes…)

In Setup Mode navigate to Edit Instrument Definition. Then set the instruments’ transpositions from Bb to A#. The good news: it gets you key sigs for Eb minor. The bad: you now have "Trumpet in A#.

(I did this for Tenor 1 and Trumpet 1 in a blank big-band template chart, and as you can (partially) see, it changed both instances of the tenors and all four of the trumpets:

(I’m really hoping that someone who knows better how to achieve this in the “boundary case” of 6bs/6#s will jump in and share the solution.)

ADDENDUM: Towards a solution…

Now Rename Player…, which will let you show " "Trumpet in Bb in the parts layouts:

Then Edit Names… to set the Show transposition to never.

This will hide the "Trumpet in A# in the score layout (which I cannot figure out how to change — is there a way?), which I would be okay with doing in a jazz big band score, where it’s assumed, but I’d not be comfortable doing in an orchestral score.

Yes, the A# instrument is currently the easiest way to do this.

If you want the Transposition in the score you will have to enter it as part of the Instrument Name.

You will have to copy/paste a flat symbol from somewhere as this Dialog does not understand Tokens. Nor can you use the Insert Music Symbol context menu.

Ok…super clunky, but it’ll do! Thanks

Yeah, it’s too bad the “prefer simpler key sigs” algorithm doesn’t extend to allowing an option when it’s literally six of one, half a dozen of the other. Might be tough to do, though.

(Alternate idea: write it in C minor and have everyone tune sharp.)

Glad I could at least offer something. Best wishes on your project!
