Sorry if this is the wrong space, but would like to see zones made floating or movable in upcoming versions of Dorico. Would be very helpful in order to work on a monitor in vertical mode, similat to the way many desktop publishing apps are designed.
Oh, some of us have mentioned this more than once. There is at least one other feature request thread with this mentioned. I agree 100%.
Hi @deenie, see this post:
IMO Dorico would be more adaptable if intunitive the way we work with paper and pen(cil)
So many thanks for the reply. some other suggestions.. let me choose the page view by default Currently, every file I have to View>Pages>Single Pages Vertically - please make it a global option.
Pro user here.. IMO, Dorico is a parallel version of desktop publishing apps, specific to music notation. All high level DP apps have this capability. Please consider implementing in upcoming versions. Right/Left/ Bottom fixed zones just feels antiquated, no?
So, if we keep requesting this and we get other users to join in requesting the same, perhaps the dev team will realize that it is definitely something they need to address. As with most things, getting the features we want with Dorico that the dev team does not think necessary is really about being a very, very, very squeaky wheel for it is, indeed, the squeaky wheel that gets the attention. No judgement, just the way it is.
you think annoying the devs is the best way to get features into the program?
Interesting idea which I donât agree with.
Personally, Iâd much rather the dev team worked on adding essential notation features before additional âcosmeticâ options.
Lute notation, drum notation, 2nd ending continuations, properties to hide and avoid collisions (or not) on more objects; stacking order of objects above the staff; augmentation dot vertical position; export folder/filename options; more note grouping options; more cautionary accidental options; support for âattaccaâ; centring the only note in a bar; parentheses/brackets on articulations and rests; ⌠â and thatâs just off the top of my head.
I dare say others will have more. And the dev team will certainly have a longer list.
You can show/hide the panels with a keypress; and most of whatâs there can be more quickly obtained using the popovers.
You can already do this in the View Options dialog.
I also like the idea of undocking panels and use them as separate windows.
You can achieve an illusion of that by opening multiple instances of your project via Window->New Window. Then you can adjust your panels of choice to the right size to work with and then you can work with your new additional window on your landscape or portrait monitor without disturbing your workflow in another mode of Dorico.
Thanks to all for your recommendations, workflow tips and link to a previous post. Your replies have been very helpful. I thought this topic was likely raised in the past. Also, @benwiggy, I wasnât aware there was the option to set the default view. I looked in Dorico->Preferences->General->View and didnât see it, but rather found it in View->View Options, then Save as Default. Thank you so much for that!
I did not say annoy. Being persistent is a far cry from desiring to annoy someone into submission. However, voices here are can be lost of they do not periodically state what they are finding that could simplify their work or even make it more pleasant.
I donât disagree that some essential notation features need to occur and, from my perspective, that would include ornaments that play besides just the trill. What is most interesting is that we all know that updates and additions to Dorico have, and probably will continue, to be added based on customer/user request. One example might be when rulers and the grid in Engrave mode that new users from the Finale camp requested.
Finally, itâs a bit presumptuous to assume that persistence is a desire to be annoying. And, it is truly annoying for someone to ask a question and then answer it so that they appear to have a questioning attitude but are really being judgmental. Peace.
Well, I canât know your intentions, but
certainly would annoy me in the end.
And while the forum is a good place to let the devs know about features wanted, as a forum user I would be annoyed if the same request would be repeated over and over again, which in my eyes youâre aiming at with
So that may be not be your aim to annoy, but might be a result
On the page view subject, it would be very cool if these settings were window specific. If they were I could have my landscape monitor in Spreads Horizontally and my portrait monitor in Single Pages Vertically.
@deenie you can also select these at the bottom too âŚ

I wouldnât call UX improvements âcosmeticâ. Anything that makes the work easier is more than merely cosmetic. When Finale added dockable tool pallets, my workflow improved exponentially. The same for programs like InDesign. Itâs even better when you can decide which tools are displayed on the pallet and save the whole configuration as a workspace. To this day, I can still open Finale or InDesign, and all my pallets with their customized tool settings are in place, saving me tons of time searching for the exact tool I need.
Exactly. Same here.
In InDesign, I have workspaces assigned to different tasks like âBook Prepâ or âPoster Designâ or âNewsletterâ. Each of these have wildly different pallets and tools that make my workflow that much easier for each task.
Imagine setting your own toolbars for âJazz Comboâ, âOrchestraâ, âDCIâ, âChoralâ, or âPercussion Ensembleâ. Each could have their own tools, playing techniques, etc. Even better if you could assign your workspace to a Template, so that launching a template set your workspace for you.
@clancyweeks Yes!
