Flow titles with subtitles

Windows 11, Dorico Pro 6.1.
In Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker the movements have subtitles:
I
II : 1-6
III
I have structured my Dorico file so that each subtitle has it’s own flow, giving me a total of 8 flows. Is there a way to get the above numbering instead of 1 - 8. For example, the second movement should start with a title:
II. Danses Caractéristiques
a) Marche
Followed by:
b) Danse del la Fée-Dragée
c) Danse russe Trepak
d) etc.
Finally:
III. Valse des Fleurs.

One way of doing this is with flow heading overrides.

Flow Headings.dorico (597.6 KB)

  • Input titles/subtitles into Project Info, including Roman numerals and letters
  • Edited the default flow heading to remove the flow number
  • Added 2 new flow headings: one with the flow title and subtitle, and one with just the subtitle
  • In Setup mode, added flow heading overrides for the score layout; mvts 1 and 3 keep the default title-only header, while the parts of mvt 2 get either the title and subtitle or just the title

Edit: I also added a Flow Subtitle paragraph style, but this is not strictly needed.

Thank you for your help.. I followed your instructions and my problem was solved, however:

  • when I condensed my music by allowing flows to start on the same page, I lost my formatting.
  • you have added a flow subtitle to the text options and I have not found you to do that.

One would do that by adding the flow-subtitle token to the flow heading “page” template in Engrave mode and (if necessary) increasing the size of the text field to hold both.

Take a look at the two flow headings I added. One of them has only the subtitle token, and one has the title and subtitle tokens. Then I assigned the appropriate heading as flow headings overrides in Setup mode.

A lot of manual formatting in Dorico winds up attached to the page or frame, which is why it should be the last thing you do. If you originally had flows start on new pages and changed to starting on the same page, then systems won’t be in the same place that they were when you made formatting changes. You might want to reset all formatting and redo it.

  • “you have added a “flow subtitle” to the text options and I have not found. How do you do that.” What I mean is the drop down list in text options (Title, Flow Title ect.). You have a Flow Subt. option which I do not have. Presumeably it was created somewhere else. I achieved the desired result by manually adjusting the text options.
  • “when I condensed my music by allowing flows to start on the same page, I lost my formatting.” If I understand you correctly there is only one possible heading / page. Consequently to achieve a subtitle only I have to use the Title and Subtitle heading and subsequently edit that frame content.
  • I would appreciate confirmation that my understanding is correct.

Oh, sorry – I added a Flow Subtitle paragraph style. (I’ll add that to my earlier answer, but it’s not strictly needed.)

No, this is not correct, at least not in v6. In Setup mode, you can specific a different heading for each flow. I used this feature to assign to each flow the heading that has the information I want to display (title only, subtitle only, or title+subtitle).
