Flows on the same page

Hi I’m fairly new to Dorico coming from Finale. I noticed that when you create a new flow in a project it is automatically put on a new page. Is it possible to put two or more flows on the same page? How do you do it? Thanks

Yes you can! See the link below

What am I doing wrong then? I created a new flow for an INTRO and dragged it to the first flow position. It is now on the first page in the attached screenshot, I have set Allow on existing page for all layouts and clicked the Apply button. Both of those music frames are in Frame Chain MA. In the upper right corner of the screenshot, those red flags on pages 1 and 2 are because I made those frames smaller. Why does the small music frame on Page 2 not move to Page 1 where there is plenty of room?

Thank you.

Aside from the page overrides on pp. 1-2…

You have collapsed the music frames (blue rectangles) in each page, so there is not room for the second system. Stretch the bottom of the blue music frame to just above the page footer and make sure your Layout Options allow flows to start partway through a page.

And do yourself a favor: get ride of the page overrides. That (along with your Layout Option settings) may correct the problem right away.

Thank you. I’ve set "Allow flows to start on existing page, but where is the Layout Options to all allow frames to start partway through a page? That seems like it would cause the problem, but I can’t find this option.

For some reason you have made the (blue) music frames small on each page. This is entirely unnecessary. Dorico fills each music frame in the frame chain until it is full, at which point it creates a new page.

If you want music to the bottom of the page, the music frame must go to the bottom of the page (there are some situations where you might want to have multiple music frames on a single page, but these are very much the exception).

The reason why I made the first frame small is because the one system it contains is the entire first flow. As I understand it, flows cannot straddle frames. That first* frame* had much whitespace at the bottom. I just shrunk the whitespace. If I make the frame on the first page bigger again, all I get is more whitespace in the frame.

I still can’t find that Layout Option, mentioned by @Derrek, to allow frames to start partway through a page. I’m allowing flows, but not frames on the same page. How do I allow multiple frames on the same page?

100% incorrect! You can have multiple flows in one frame and one flow filling multiple frames across multiple pages.

Awesome, @Janus. Now, when I make that frame bigger, the music from the second page flows into it, as desired. I must have configured things in the order. I’m going to need to try it again with my new understanding. Thank you all.

My advice. Don’t worry about layout beyond the basic Layout Options. Dorico’s default page templates work for many needs - leave them alone until you know what you are doing.

I just ran in to this problem again, and found another possible cause. View > Signposts. Is there an unwanted FRAME BREAK causing the problem?

You’ve learned the hard way. But yes, showing signposts and voice colours are two essential tools that any dorician should leave ON as a default. It saves time, frustration… Hide invisibles is a keycommand away, anyways
