Fonts set to absolute size appear smaller when attached to rests

I am doing a synthesizer part with lots of patch changes, and sometimes the texts which indicate patch changes need to be attached to a rest (for example, at the start of a section where each hand has a patch change, but only one hand plays for the first measure). I have created a paragraph style with a border for these patch change indications, and the font size is set to “absolute” (not staff-relative). However, when the texts are attached to a rest, the font appears smaller than the texts which are attached to notes, and there seems to be no alternative other than to change the font of every text box that is attached to a rest individually, which would be quite cumbersome. Am I missing something?

That sounds strange. I get the same size.

Yeah, it’s identical for me too:

size

We’ll likely need to see a file that exhibits that behavior to test and see what’s going on.

Thanks for the reply. How can I send the Dorico file for you to look at? I tried uploading it here, but the size is too large. I did attach a couple of pictures so you could see what I was talking about. Actually, since writing to you, I’ve realized that the rest attachment is probably not the problem, since there are other places in the score where the texts appear in different sizes, but where the texts are all attached to notes. I’m using the same paragraph style for all of these, and the paragraph style I created is set to “absolute,” not “staff-relative.” However, as you can see from the pictures, the sizes vary, and actually I can’t find any pattern to explain it. It’s not always smaller (or larger) on the same staff, for example. By the way, when I double click on these texts in write mode, the text editor confirms that they are indeed a variety of font sizes, ranging from 8.3 to 10.5. (I have my paragraph style set at 9.2) This was an xml import, with the original document created in finale, by the way; however, I have tried deleting these texts and re-typing them with the new paragraph style, and the problem persists. Any suggestions you can send my way would be greatly appreciated!

Try if attaching the Silent Template reduce the size enough.

Otherwise, make a copy of the file, and delete most of the bars, not the complete piece is needed, just nough to show the problem.

The Play->Playback Template->Silence, that is.

be different, be brave, be you full score 5.2.26.dorico (2.2 MB)

That worked - okay, here’s the file.

Crystal is size 8.3, but Trumpet is size 10.5

Jesper

Right, but shouldn’t the paragraph style control the font size? Do I have to go through the score and manually adjust each staff attached text until the fonts match? (And also, what made the font sizes change? I entered them all as 9.2.)

I get 9.2 when I try on your score.

Jesper

If you select them and do Edit>Reset Appearance, they should all come back to the original font size of their paragraph style.

But some of them use Instrument Boxes, some others Default Text or XML-created ones like Times Regular 9.2pt (MusicXML)

So I think you should first check that they’re all using the same Paragraph Style, then reset their appearance.

Okay - success! Edit>Reset Appearance did the trick. Just so I understand, the process should be to change the paragraph style, and then select “reset appearance”?

You should be able to do it in either order.

FWIW, there are some nice improvements in Dorico 6 that would have helped you a little here. For starters, when you select a text item in the score, v6 gives you more information in the status bar than v5.

Here it’s telling you which paragraph style is in use, and which font. And the asterisk tells you that the item’s appearance differs from its base paragraph style.

v6 also lets you do Select All and then Filter for text using a particular paragraph style. So after you make sure these text items are all using the Instrument Boxes style, you can select them all in one go and reset their appearance.

Good to know - thanks!

Reset Appearance will remove the font size overrides but won’t make all your boxes appear in the same Paragraph Style, so the result will be better but still not consistent…

As I was saying, I noticed at least 3 different Paragraph Styles amongst your instrument boxes.

That’s why I was suggesting to first unify the Paragraph Styles, and then remove the overrides by resetting the appearance.
