I see questions close to this in the message board, but none exactly like what I am experiencing. I am attempting to put in a rhythm: dotted-quarter, eighth rest, dotted quarter, eighth rest.
When I input this I end up with the Dotted quarters as quarter tied to eighth. This looks fussy and overly complicated for the texture. How do I FORCE the dotted rhythm (with the dot!)
I am sure there is an easy setting, maybe even global, but I cannot find it.
I had the same problem as you did, and the way I solved it was by pressing “O” before inputting the notes.
If you always want this rhythm to display this way in this project, then go into Notation Options, Note Grouping, and change this setting:
If you want to manage this on a case by case basis, then you can leave this setting whichever way you want, and use Force Duration, as @TradViolin suggests.
I have the notation options set that way, but it does not change the output in one place. It is notated in 4/4 time where I am having the problem. Later in the piece, same notation, but in 2/2 time and the notation is correct. Two screen shots below: second is in 2/2 time.
I am fine with fixing this on a single case basis, but this project is to help me learn Dorico. So, I would like to know if there is a reason this is happening.
I get this with my defaults, so there certainly is an option somewhere!
My guess is this is the relevant one?

Was this project created natively in Dorico or an XML import? Also, there have recently been some reports of issues when the time sig is added via the right panel or the Hub, like this thread. You might try deleting the time sig, then re-inputting it via the popover and see if the notation updates.
Thank you for the link to the previous discussion. I had already forced duration on the project, so couldn’t really go back and try out the “removing the time sig, re-entering” trick. BUT, I did an experiment:
- Started a new project
- Set notation options to desired configuration
- set up beginning time sig of 3/4 (like the original project)
- went in a few measures, changed time sig to 4/4
- Input rhythm – RETURNED incorrect rhythm (went against selected notation options)
- Removed 4/4 time signature
- Re-entered 4/4 time sig with popover - THIS DID change the rhythm to desired rhythm.
This experiment seems to agree with other people’s experience.
Seems like the bug may still be present.
