Force hairpins between dynamics to always show (galley view)?

This happens to me sometimes when the measure has minimal note values like whole or half notes, so the entire measure becomes too compact. There is supposed to be hairpin there, and it does show if I drag the immediate hairpin on one side left or right, but then it overlaps onto the next measure which I do not want to do.

I looked and played around with settings in layout & engrave options, can’t find anything to fix this…

There are several threads about this. See this response from Daniel for more info and suggestions.

Hi @wing

  1. Here is a (manual) way : adjust the horizontal spacing handle, so that the hairpin appears (but make this at the end of layouting as it is Break sensitive, meaning that if your bars move to another system, the spacing change will be lost). Also you need to do this on the part too (for all layouts where this dynamic appears). (But see below for the second method):

  1. Another method is to set the Beat-relative position of the (immediate) dynamic on Before (this gives the hairpin more space to be drown). I suggest to make this override with the Set local properties on Globally so that it applies also to the parts (in all layouts where this dynamic appears)! :

  1. Another further possibility is to apply a note spacing change with a little increment of the value to the bar/s (and then reset it afterwards). This also should be done in every layout…):

Other tweaks: And to avoid that the hairpin looks like an accent in case there is very little space for it (as mentioned in the post linked by @Mark_Johnson ), increase the Minimum length for hairpins in Engraving options/Dynamics/Gradual dynamics/Advanced (default ist 3):

and reduce eventually the gap between hairpins and immediate dynamics (default is 1/2):

This is something I’ve been complaining about for literally years and have no hope for it ever getting fixed, frankly.

None of that has any relevance to galley mode.

Thank you for taking the time to explain all that - useful to know in the future so I will bookmark it. However in my scenario the issue comes up most frequently in galley view where I write. Even though it shows up in page view just fine, the only reason it can be an issue is when I’m returning to a large project and scrolling around inside of galley view, it’s confusing seeing no hairpin (looks like a mistake).

It does seem odd to me that Dorico can’t expand measure length dynamically as it does for pretty much anything else.
