I wasn’t able to find an easy way to do augmentation, or diminution of a thematic material in the Note Tools popover… I’m not even sure that such an option should implemented as popover, or pop-up window?!
Here is an example a polyphonic thematic augmentation (in red) and diminution (in blue) (the dux theme is in green):
We’ll need to be able to specify both the augmentation and diminution:
To augment / diminish the note durations by 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 (times).
Regarding the example above diminishing by 4 time the dux, we’ll get 1 quarter note and 6 eight notes.
The augmentation example is actually augmented by 2 times.
An option to add tuplets per bars (from beat - to beat in a desired bar)
Here Dorico should be able to calculate how many bars and beats are included in a selected area when.
Some other options, which are already available, will be welcomed in a Tool like this.
Pitch shifting the notes.
Inverting / mirroring
These days I’m working on pieces with a good amount of polyphony… I really need a centralized tool like this to save time and reduce the tech work. Currently I’m doing everything manually which takes more time.
Probably not only me, but many of us will appreciate such a tool?!
There are tools to double/half durations. Used in conjunction with insert mode, you should be faster than doing everything manually…
Of course, there are still problems with tuplets, so your feature request is perfectly valid
To select this section and augment the note durations at once.
The quarter notes should become halves, the eights - quarters, the grace - eights, the halves - whole.
Everything without messing appearance in the bars.
I’ve tried selecting a region of notes and applying Edit Duration > Double Note Duration … well, it doesn’t work the way I need. It messes everything:
Here is the result (in red)
Which means Dorico should be able to automatically create additional bars in order to properly augment (horizontally) the melody, or in case of diminution, to reduce the bars. In case of an existing music, it should just use the surround bars without affecting the existing music.
Most efficiently would be if the adding / reducing the bars is a user selectable option with cautionary pop-up in case of an existing music, to prevent unwanted results.
What would make rhythmic augmentation/diminution extremely helpful would be the possibility of adding or subtracting any rhythmic value (e.g. add/subtract a sixteenth note duration to/from each note, add a dot to each note, and so forth), with Dorico adding/subtracting the appropriate number of beats. So for example quarter - quarter - eighth + dot would become dotted quarter - dotted quarter - dotted eighth. Very useful for complex contrapuntal work, and should go under the transform rhythm menu.
Ok. I have been experimenting some more and see that you can do some of this, but not, as far as I can see to this point, achieve the augmentation by addition of a dot,
