Frame Breaks and System Page Overhang

Hello All
I’m struggling with a basic concept here. I’ve got some measures that are hanging off the end of my page, and I’d like to move them to the next page. I think this has something to do with Frame Breaks, but I’ve not been able to figure it out. You can see what I’m looking at in the attached screenshot. I would obviously like Page 2 of my part here to end on Bar 60, and then for Bar 61 to be moved on to Page 3.

I’ve read the manual and watched a pile of videos, but the “frames” concept continues to elude the understanding of this old Finale refugee. Hopefully this will be an obvious fix to someone out there who is in the know.

Thanks so much.

My first step would be to delete all those purple signposts (Frame breaks and System breaks)!

Please, just let Dorico decide its best layout based on your Layout Option settings (principally Space size, Note Spacing and Vertical Spacing) and only then force it to something different.

Thanks Janus

That helped. It still took a lot of fiddling to make it work, as the decisions Dorico made really didn’t work for this document because some of the lines had lyrics and others not. So I really had to adjust each line as many of them had too many measures for the lyrics to be useable. But I was able to get there in the end thanks to your tip to delete the signposts and start from scratch.

If it’s not too much trouble, I’m curious if you know where the term “casting off” comes from as a description for setting the numbers of measures per line. It took some digging for me to figure out where that functionality was contained, as I’ve never seen that term before in relation to notation. Not an urgent question at all, just general curiosity as I work to scale the learning curve with Dorico.

Thanks again for your help, I’ve got the part looking readable now.
