Freddy Holm - " Sometimes I Get The Feeling "

Hi,

I’m new to this forum.
Here’s a song I recorded and mixed in Cubase 6 today.
I sing and play drums, bass, guitar, pedalsteel, cello, autoharp and glockenspiel on this.
The drums are played with Roland td-3 kit , using Toontracks Superior plugin.
The signal chain is a Neumann tlm 67 (stellar ribbon on the auto harp) →
Chandler Germanium preamp → UA 1176 → Prism Orhpeus → Cubas 6.

Hope you like it

Freddy

Hi Freddy,

Nice first post! :sunglasses:

Great song and performance. The autoharp and cello are a nice addition.

Mixwise there’s quite a lot of reverb. That’s not a bad thing, it gives the song a retro sound, but maybe that’s what you’re aiming for?

Anyway, great stuff, more please!

Cheers,
Wim

Hi Wim,

thanks for listening and commenting.
I’ve always been a fan of the retro sound.
So I guess I automaticly put stuff on to make it sound “vintage”.
Like tape sim on the drums, and mono reverb etc etc.

Again, thanks and I’ll definately post more.

Freddy

Hi Freddy,

welcome!

Great song to enter with. When your vocals came in, my 1st thought was the band, ‘Roachford’.

I wonder what it would sound like if you miss out the section between 2.18 and 2.33? …just a thought

Sav

Hey Sav,

thanks a bunch!
Never heard of Roachford. I’ll check em out.

Well, I tried to cut that part in half, but then it kinda lost its meaning…
I think it needs it to build up to the refrain.

Thanks for listening and commenting

Freddy

Not so much sounding the same, perhaps more of a vibe thing, and the FX on the vox.

Roachford “Ride The Storm” is what kinda came to mind.

lookin’ forward to the next one!

Sav

Good stuff :sunglasses:

Wow!
This one really drew me in. I love your voice and subtle delivery. Great melodic sense and some gorgeous
production choices. Well recorded, too. It’s under 4 minutes so I don’t think you need to worry about shortening it.
With a little luck I think you could win a wide audience with this.
You have a new fan. ok…more please.

Lenny

Wow!! Thanks guys!
Appreciate it

Lenny, I don’t think a little luck will do… A universe of luck! Then maybe.
I’m glad you liked it, and I will certainly post more.

Freddy

I like it too. Very nice voice, nice arrangement, and clever lyrics. Thanks for putting this up.
Early

You have another fan in me. Great lyrics and cello part killed me. I too was wondering about the reverb on kick but it grew on me. Also the I wonder if another drum idea during cello part might help, brush, rudiment soft snare/no kick…just a thought but it kills as is too.

Hi Freddy,

welcome to the forum.

Superb song writing and wonderful vocal. I loved the falling “Ah-ahs” behind the chorus line. Very nice.
I once played pedal steel (Fender 10-string) so I liked that bit as well.

I thought the vocal was a bit over-compressed (in terms of attack) and would have preferred it a bit
on the more gentle, less grabby side. Perhaps the cross-stick could sound less chunky?

Minor quibbles really, it’s a great piece.

Jet

Early,
thanks. Glad you liked it.
kzarider,
thanks a bunch! I don’t have any reverb on the kick drum.
Because there is no kick drum  It’s a floor tom that has a long tone.
So I guess that can sound like reverb.
Thanks for coming up with ideas.
I might not change anything for now, but I certainly “store” those suggestions,
and will try them out if/when I mix the song again.
Jet,
thanks for listening and commenting. I agree on the vocals.
Sometimes I’m a little to heavy on my 1176
You’re probably right about the cross-stick too.
But as I said to kzarider, I’ll check it out if/when I mix the song again.
A goal is to make an album eventually.

Very cool, now I’m really impressed, I love a unique sound and it’s a Tom don’t change a thing

Freddy,
I wrote you a couple of PMs but they seem to be sitting sadly in my outbox (must be me). Want to speak with you about a recording, my email is kenny@kennyzarider.com ( hate to do this here ) but if we can communicate that way it might be easier. Love the youtube links you sent…Either forward your direct info here or drop me a note.
Thanks!
Kenny

The background instrument at 1:30 sounds so cool. the wah wah type instrument. what is that.

Thanks mrd777.
That’s a pedalsteel with lots of reverb
No wah wah.
