Full Stereo Cubase/DAW Audio Capture in OBS Without ASIO Plugins

This method bypasses OBS studio’s failure to capture ASIO entirely by soloing the DAW output channels, via the headphone buss into an external USB Xonar U7 MkII audio device, allowing OBS to record live screen and live DAW audio in full stereo, without ASIO plugins, virtual cables, ReaRoute, or other deficient, frustrating, compromised alternatives. I just completed capturing all 14 of my CuBase sessions, with full stereo audio in OBS Studio. Checkout the excellent audio quality. I recommend “Through The Rend”. Composed on one Bass, it comprises 33 separate bass tracks. It is very much worth a listen, if only to appreciate the positive outcome.

Requirements:
1x external USB Xonar U7 MkII audio type device.
Your locally installed and assigned ASIO device (proprietary or 3rd party).
1x 3.5 to 3.5 (or 3.5 to 6.5) stereo cable.
2x mono, or 1x stereo cable/s to return to your DAW channel/s.

Desk Setup:
Configure a Stereo Master send on your DAW mixer (assign 1x full stereo or 2x mono channels) say 7+8.
Solo the channel/s to assign them to the headphone buss.
Connect your 3.5 to 3.5 cable from you headphone send on your DAW desk, to the line-in on your external USB audio device.
Connect 2x mono, or 1x stereo cable/s to return to your DAW channel/s, say 9+10.

OBS Setup:
Add 1x Audio Input Capture and assign your external USB audio input to it.
Add 1x Audio Output Capture and assign your external USB audio output to it.

You should now have level indication on your OBS Audio Input Capture source.

Or use an audio interface with loopback capability.
With my RME interface I just pressed a button on screen. No hardware mixer, no cables, no DA/AD conversion…

LoL, yes. For all you lucky loopback loonies, with the luxury of built in LB, then the problem is, no problem, but for myself and many, whom either are comfortable with their setups, or love their Tascam Model 12 DAW controller, this method delivers a clean, reliable alternative to what, frankly is a variable pool of software connect and hope solutions. Thanks Johnny, what desk are you using?

I threw out any desk and do everything in the box. It works for me, doesn’t mean it works for everybody else, too.
