First time posting here. I have a concern about FX channel which is linked only to my room mics on “sends” in order to boost the room reverb. Since I started using the FX channel without any reverb plug ins, I noticed that my drums all of a sudden sound bigger than before. Changing the phase of the channel or enabling the reverb plug in reverted my drum sound back to normal sound size but still altered the sound to just a little bit worse or different anyways. EQing the FX channel couldn’t help at all. Is this a problem or is it just how FX channels work?
I use Cubase 13 pro and 14 mics for my recordings in total.
An FX track is basically just like a group track, it is effectively a “bus” that takes all the signals that are sent to it and sums them together and then the sum goes to whatever output you have selected.
The FX track has inserts and if you put something on an insert it will process whatever goes through the track just like a group or audio track would. If you bypass, turn off or remove the plugin then the signal still flows through the track to the output.
A “send” takes a ‘copy’ of the signal at some point in the signal chain (pre- or post-fader) and sends that copy to the destination you choose.
This means that if you have room mic audio tracks and use a send on each to get the signal to the FX track, have no active plugin in an insert on the FX track and set the output of the FX track to the same as the audio tracks then really all you are doing is adding more of that signal to the output.
Level goes up.
I think that it is not really a good thing to do that. If you are going to use an FX track then you should use it for effect plugins, not just to increase level. If you want to only increase the level of the “room mics” then just turn the level up on those tracks.

I did a huge mistake and I feel embarrassed about this. The main reason I got altered sound in that case was because the 2 room mics weren’t only just sent to the FX track but I sent them to the direct routing as well and it made a lot sense after you made me search what I have done in the past. But this mistake for my inexpensive equipment could help me do different things as well in case you want to create a different aesthetic on sound
