G2 (MIDI 43) note not recorded from any MIDI keyboard

Hi team,

I’m using Dorico 5 on macOS with multiple MIDI keyboards (including a Nord Stage 3), and I’ve encountered a persistent issue:

• All notes work normally during real-time MIDI input, except G2 (MIDI note 43)

• G2 is not recorded or played in real time input

• G2 is heard when input manually via mouse (note entry works)

• G2 does not light up in the virtual keyboard of Halion Sonic SE when played from MIDI keyboard

• Other notes (F#2, G#2, etc.) are fine

• This behavior occurs even:

• In a new empty project

• After resetting all preferences (deleting ~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 5**)**

• The same keyboard sends G2 fine in GarageBand and Cubase 13

It appears Dorico is filtering MIDI note 43 at the input stage.

Has anyone experienced this, or is it a known issue?

Thanks in advance.

Could you have assigned that MIDI key as a command ‘shortcut’ in Dorico’s Preferences?

I don’t think so, but it’s certainly a very old mistake on my part in my early days in the software, because this silent note persists during updates.
thanks a lot.

Anything you’ve done will be in the user settings files. They are in different locations on Mac and PC. At worst, you could remove the preferences.xml file, and see how that changes things. (After relaunch.)

I’m having the same problem on Dorico 6 Pro. MIDI note 84 (C5) won’t enter from the MIDI kybd. I either have to mouse it in or play a C#, then cancel the #. I wish I knew how to track down the problem.

Hi @DonO1 (and @BENOIT_SERRIER), to find out if that note is mapped to a Key Command (and so deactivated for note input), quit Dorico, go into your Dorico system folder (*), open the keycommands_en.json file (en is for English, it may be a different language in your system) with a text editor. Find the line that contains MIDI:NOTEON84, and delete that string, save and restart Dorico; or take a note of which command it is linked to and delete the MIDI command assignment from the Properties > Key Commands dialogue.

(*) On MacOS the Dorico system folder is here:
/Users/Your User Name/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6

On Windows:
%APPDATA%\Roaming\Steinberg\Dorico 6\

You may need to delete the associated { } brackets the enclose the line, too.

I thought that referring to the string, it twas implicit, but thank you for pointing it out.

Thank you so much, Christian. I used your 2nd method. Works perfectly now!
