"Gap between adjacent lyrics" ignored?

Hi smart people—

I usually find that Dorico underestimates how much space syllables require to avoid collisions, especially on short notes. Case in point:

Perhaps there’s something wonky about the font I’m using (Cormorant Garamond). But given that the font is required for this project, is there an easy way to avoid these collisions globally? (Increasing the “Minimum gap” setting to 3 spaces gets “to storm” nice & clean, but obviously spaces allllllll the other syllables out in pretty weird ways.) The best solution I’ve found is to manually shuffle bars down into lower systems to allow things to spread out more, but I have a hunch even that could be more automated if I knew better what options I have available to me.

I’ve read through this thread and checked (I think?!) everything mentioned there—I don’t have any playing techniques involved that I’m aware of. (Still very much a Dorico novice, obviously!)

Can someone gently point me to some setting I’m overlooking?

This frequently (but not always) results from someone forcing too many measures into a system, which cramps the notes (or lyrics). Engrave mode shows in the right margin the percent filled compared to Dorico’s estimate of what should fit on each line/system.

Cormorant Garamond

Hi @davidmglasgow, I tried with your font (Cormorant Garamond), and don’t see any problem. I reduced some other Engraving Options (you can choose different settings of course), and set Rastral Size to 6mm. See also that your system fullness in not over 100% as @Derrek suggests:

Thanks so much for these quick suggestions, @Derrek and @Christian_R! Glad to hear Cormorant Garamond isn’t a cursed font. Here’s what it looks like when I set everything to match @Christian_R’s screenshots—Dorico is telling me this system is 96.2% full:

Is there maybe a place where I can specify I want no system to be more than, say, 80% full, so Dorico gives itself more room to work its magic?

There must be some different settings or some different situation in your file. Can you post a Dorico project?

Changing this Note Spacing Layout Option to Use actual widths, seems to work:

I haven’t got your font; but whatever the problem is, it seems to be specific to the Layout Options in your Parts.

The problem doesn’t occur in Score Layouts; nor in Parts when I use my defaults.

“Make Space for Lyrics” is on, so it’s not that.

Also: you’ve got extender lines on single notes that shouldn’t have them. (Bar 5, 16, etc.)
