Thanks to the patient and knowledgeable benwiggy I’ve now learned how to get Dorico to recognize my Garritan JABB voices. So now I’m trying to learn how to make Dorico create key switches so that I can access and use the ks voices. I’ve gone through the Dorico Pro help files, and searched on this site but I can’t find any reference on how to. In Finale creating a key switch was easy as the instructions to the instrument were imbedded in the playing technique indicated in the part (eg. to flute in a sax part). Where can I go to learn how to effect key switches in Dorico? Thanks!
You typically need to create a playing technique via Library > Playing Techniques, and make sure that it is triggering the specified playback technique as specified in the expression map.
Have you watched the Dorico videos on creating Playback Templates? All the things that you are wrestling with have been laid out in great detail.
Anthony Hughes does a series of videos here:
John Barron goes through making Playback Templates for Spitfire’s BBCSO. It’s a bit old, but it covers all the concepts, so is easily applicable to Garritan.
I find John’s videos very frustrating to watch as his mind bounces around from one topic to another instead of going in a straight line. I seem to have figured out that the brass mutes are now in play, but I want my saxes to double. Having put the playing techniques into Dorico how do I edit them to make the key switches? As an example I’ve added to flute into my score but I don’t know how or where to enter the correct CC# to actually make that change. When I click edit none of the items in that extensive window addresses what I’m after. I apologize if I’m being obtuse, but I’m not seeing the information I’m after in these videos.
My problem is that I don’t know how. The videos are great but don’t show a step by step to get from my JABB voices to writing key switches. I’ve got the brass instruments working but can’t figure out how to get my sax doubles to play.

If you want your saxes to double flutes, then the best approach is to add flute instruments to the players currently holding saxophones, and use Dorico’s regular functionality for instrument changes. Dorico will then take care of switching to the flute sound at the right time automatically, and you don’t need to do anything special.
This is an old video, but it still applies:
Hmmm. Thanks for that. As a Dorico newbie I guess I’m still thinking in Finale. Again, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
