Just wondering if someone can tell me how I get rid of these sys
tem break markers so that I can easily see the chords behind ?

One can hide the Signposts (or subsets of them) in the View > Signposts menu.

One can even set up a keyboard shortcut to toggle signposts view on and off 
You can temporarily hide all non-printing things on the page when you hold down the corresponding key:
And select stuff behind other things by Shift-Alt-clicking at a position with overlapping items:
