Getting overdrive/ distorted sound in all amps and presets of AMP Rack

Hello nice people! I am connecting my electric guitar to my UR44, then adding an audio track, and trying to use AMP Rack plugin (selected from the inserts list) - I am getting all sounds distorted / like with overdrive with all presets and all amps. Do you can think of a reason? All levels, including input, looks fine. Thank you!

Hello @RockLior, welcome to the forum.

If you don’t use Amp Rack, does your guitar sound clean then?
If not: try connecting somethings else, for example a mic. Does that sound clean?

Might be obvious, but check the input levels on the UR44, start at zero and bring them up gradually. Particularly if you have active pickups on the guitar.

Hi @Northunder , appreciate your reply, yes the sound of the guitar is indeed clean when connected directly to the UR44, when connecting a mic everything is OK and sound is clean.

Hi @manassas77 , Thank you for your help! already did that, and it is not an issue of input levels on the UR44 . My guitar is a Gibson custom, not an active one.

I haven’t used the Cubase amps in a long time - is there an input gain on them that could be an issue? What about another amp sim - Guitar Rig or Amplitube - do you get the same problem with those?

Hi @manassas77 , For as far as I found out the only GAIN INPUT is in consol.
Also through the VST Bass Amp with a bass guitar I get distortion.
BTW, by connecting the guitar or bass to the UR44 when not through cubase, it sounds fine.
if I open an audio track in cubase and connect the guitar or bass, I am not sure it is 100% clean - very difficult to hear, I suspect there might be a slight distortion. And maybe when I open one of the plugins it just amplify it… could be a possibility… not sure

Hmmm … not sure what else I can suggest. Just tried the Amp Rack with a direct connection from my Gibson 335 into my Focusrite and it works straight out of the box.

So can you record a clean guitar sound into Cubase, with no insert FX?

Do you have any of the DSP FX that come with Steinberg products activated in-line with the UR44?

What about trying a different input on the UR44 ? What about an XLR connection instead?

If you are still getting issues can you post a screenshot of your audio connections and studio setup?

Also if you don’t have another guitar sim, a version of Guitar Rig is free with the Native Instruments Komplete Start:

Hi @manassas77,
Thanks for trying to help me , and actually your good suggestions at least helped me to focus the problem!
I downloaded the Guitar Rig, and indeed also with the standalone version through UR44 I get distortion - hence at least now I know it is something related to the UR44.
I will try to connect to it through the XLR input via a DI box and see the outcome. Thanks to you I am now positive that there is a slight distortion (almost not heard), and probably it gets enhanced when connected to a plugin.
Thanks again Dude! :folded_hands:

Good stuff - I hope you get it sorted with a different cable route.

Actually the thanks is mutual … I haven’t tried the Amp Rack in an age, and I now realise there are some pretty cool emulations in there. It’s like having a new plugin :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Cheers!
