Graphical sluggishness

How do I optimise Dorico to not be sluggish when scrolling around the score? I’m going to move to other software if I can’t, watching someone zoom around on Sibelius with no sluggishness was the final straw for me. Any tips? Yes I have a new mac, it can run Ableton big Ableton Live sessions without issue or lag.

I know there’s many threads about this so, could it be the size of my audio library? How do I reduce that down to the bare necessities? I don’t care about hearing the nicest playback sounds.

Is it a large orchestral score, many bars, heavily condensed?

I find that when I work on a large score, if it’s not condensed Dorico is quite fast. but the second I condense the score it slows considerably.
This is sort of normal as condensing, if I recall, requires Dorico to constantly check for what is and what isn’t condensed.

It’s in the Edit menu.

As ever, if you can give some specifics, then that might help. Under File > Project Statistics, what’s the size of your projects?

It’s true that large documents can slow down; but if you’re experiencing slow scrolling in smaller documents, then that may be some other problem, which can be isolated and fixed at your end.

What audio libraries are you using? If you’re only using the built-in libraries, or Noteperformer, then that shouldn’t be an issue. The performance penalty only comes in with very large professional libraries like Spitfire BBCSO or Vienna Instruments.

I can’t find any problem or slowness with this project. I can scroll around in Galley View and Page View perfectly.

How frequent are your auto-saves set to in Preferences? Dorico can hang while it’s saving; and if your disk is slow, this may interrupt things. (Though you do say you have a new Mac.)

How much RAM do you have?

Next thing is the create a diagnostic report from the Help menu, and upload it here, so that the developers can see if there’s something that points to a problem with your setup.

I’m not sure what might be causing that. You might want to check what key commands you’ve assigned to zoom commands. Are you using an external keyboard – could it be faulty? Are you holding down any keys for anything?

Interesting. Nah no external keyboard, I zoom primarily with the trackpad too.

So could you be triggering hundreds of ‘micro-zooms’ with two fingers on the trackpad?

Make sure that it’s clean, and that only one finger of one hand is resting on it.

UPDATE. I plugged my laptop in to my audio interface for the first time in a while, and as soon as I did, I noticed Dorico suddenly jumps back to full speed navigation, smooth as butter, then as soon as I disconnect the interface, back to sluggishness! What’s going on there?
The interface is a usb-c Audient iD14

Weird. Make sure that Dorico is not set to output to that interface when it’s not there, in Edit > Device Setup.

Also, download the video, don’t view it in the built-in player since it changes the frame rate in that and it’s hard to tell

I can’t really tell what the problem is from the video. I can’t see you change the audio device in the recording – there’s just some scrolling, which seems pretty constant.
