Hi All,
Are there any specific minimum graphic requirements for Cubase? I’ve been pretty rock solid up until CB 11 Pro but now in 13, I’m starting to crash and sometimes Windows 10 crashes. Never had this problem before and I’m wondering if I’m starting to outrun graphics. This is an integrated graphics system on the MB and I’m wondering if I need to install a dedicated card.
I’m running Windows 10 with an i7 6700K processor, 32GB of ram and a 49" AOC curved monitor.
Lately, several instances of Melodyne 5 is all I’ve been working with on up to 25 vocal audio tracks and if I don’t save close to every 5 minutes, either CB or Windows crashes. On CB 11, I’ve run up to 100 tracks of mixed instruments, audio and multiple effects on all of them and had been rock solid.
I appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks!
just about any graphics card is good enough to run Cubase. It isn’t very demanding on the display. I’ve had a few issues with my AMD card thru the years, but a driver update/roll back has fixed it every time. Cubase 11 was (is still?) rock solid, this is not my experience with Cubase 13 yet. I think if you go for a cheap AMD or an expensive Nvidia or whatever you won’t notice much performance boost in Cubase your current setup. I don’t know which integrated graphics system you have, but I would assume it’s Intel. Either way, if you have problems with crashes check the dmp files first of all to try and figure out what is the cause of the crashes.
You have a 49" monitor, if it’s 5120x1440 or greater, then yes, get a GPU to handle all those pixels.
Unless you’re a hard core gamer, I’d think twice about any Nvidia GPU.
Also, Cubase doesn’t need a fancy GPU, but it’s not unheard of for plugins to want a bit more muscle.
Also, too, do you use the video functions in Cubase?
Did the problems start before or after you got the 49" monitor?
That’s an old CPU, 7 years old, the graphics on it will struggle to run a 49" monitor, assuming it’s 2k or 4k, with the newest software!
So a dedicated GFX (look for a 2nd hand one if money is tight) will help a great deal, takes the strain off the CPU.
NVidia 2060/3060 will do fine, but if you do invest in a better one, go for a 4070 +, you can utilise it in some of the software, would think Cubase will integrate the GFX render in processing, like Spectralayers does and it makes a huge difference!
I would also add that you observe your CPU temperature (download Core Temp or HWInfo), seen it where the computer would restart every few mins of heavy use, it was due to the thermal paste wearing off causing the CPU to overheat then reboot to save itself.
So get some thermal paste, $5 from Amazon or maybe borrow/pay for a small amount from a local computer shop, remove the CPU fan, wipe off the residue from the CPU and cooling fan, then re-apply, see if it makes a difference.
Thanks,
The system I have is integrated into the Asus Prime Z270 MB.
I’ve seen users here post dmp files. I’ve never done so but don’t know where I’d retrieve them. Also, I’d assume I would have to get the files for CB and the OS seeing as they both have crashed.
Any help there would be appreciated.
Thanks for your thoughts.
With that said, I’d invest in a 4070+ considering how fast technology advances. I’ll have to check to make sure the MB will support it.
I have thermal paste but I’m pretty sure the CPU doesn’t have any thermal problems. The fans accelerate automatically when processing gets intensive and that’s never happened in any DAW usage. Maybe a little when rendering video but i seldom do that on this computer.
Yes, the monitor is 5120x1440. I’m not a gamer, at least not on this 'puter. It’s solely for CB and anything related.
I hadn’t used the video functions in CB but def planned on it in the near future.
The problems started after I got the 49" monitor but I’m pretty certain it’s not the culprit. I ran CB 11 on it for a good while with no problems. Problems started when I started running 13 Pro and Windows generating a series of updates. I always clone a separate SSD with the last solid working system to revert to if things get too out of hand.
With NVIDIA make sure to install the Studio Driver and not the Game Driver
Noted, thanks!
