Groove Agent and Drum Machine

I am glad to see the new Drum Machine in Cubase 14. I have been making kits in Groove Agent with totally custom samples for years. I assume I can load those kits into the new Drum Machine in Cubase 14. But why did they not just add these features to Groove Agent?

Given the historical pattern. I think Groove Agent is now dead. There will be no more improvements to it. Sad! Why never improve?

For me its a VST that is perfect as is - the best MPC replica. I would prefer if they don’t mess around with it - is intuitive & easy to use.

What do you want to improve?

It is my most used VST - every single track. All my drums are done with Groove Agent.

If Groove Agent is perfect, why the Drum Machine?

By calling it perfect, you have confirmed my intuition that there will be no more improvements. That is how Steinberg operates. The newer thing is said to have a better sound engine. They want the publicity of a new thing.

I’m probably doing something wrong, but I’m not sure you can load the GA kits into a drum machine track. As a matter of fact, I can’t actually see any presets for it either (this may be user error)

I’m not sure if GA will go in deep freeze. There are things it can do that the drum track can’t, and I imagine that Steinberg would want to continue selling the sample libraries for it too.

Could be wrong, but from my noodling it seems that they are going to be different tools for different jobs - if you want to get something up and running quick, drum machine will be the go-to, but if you going for something more complicated to fancy then back to GA.

It wouldn’t surprise me a huge amount of the lite version of GA bundled in with Cubase Pro goes away, but the full version I think will be around for a while.

Maybe

I use GA and the patterns quite heavily, but finding the style and beats you’re looking for is virtually impossible—the patterns just have some random name.

Some way of being able to select the main snare and/or kick pattern would really help.

I do like how they have variable intensity and complexity controls for each pattern as well.

They did a really crappy job of explaining and promoting this instrument, although that is not unusual for Steinberg.

I do hope they continue GA development.

Maybe they should make it the way of Adobe with multiple programs instead of trying to fit everything into one application. It’s really bloated and getting worse.

But if they do that than somebody will write a post on their forum worrying that the older app is gonna die.

We have Groove Agent, Beat Maker and Drum Machine. Why do they have three Drum Machines. This is insane! Who is running Steinberg? They seem lost!

You come across a bit like a drama queen. Making a fuzz out of nothing.

Beat Maker (whose real name is Beat Designer) is a MIDI plugin = no sounds.
DrumMachine is existing only inside of Cubendo; it has synthesis functionality that GA does not possess at the moment.
Groove Agent is the full, stand-alone instrument, with functionality that vastly exceeds DM. It is also availabe for all other DAWs.
GA SE is the stripped down version of GA for Cubendo.

If GA will get further development, then GA SE will also get further development.

“At the moment” You think there will be a change within the next 20 years? Groove agent is dead, Drum Machine will be dead. They can’t stay on track.

SB has become forward thinking, that’s good for the future.
It appears to be already heading for some sort of AI and data/sensory fusion, watch out for 2029.
I was toying with Apple Intelligence and that gives one enough hint to where things are headed.

The Arranger Track, a desperate and failed response to Ableton. Nobody uses it. It is dead and bloat.

Greg Ondo recently said he sees no purpose in AI within Cubase. Sad to see another person proclaiming perfection in a very old product.

Cubase continues to improve, yet the leadership seems really poor.

He probably meant something like Suno.

He was asked if Cubase would be including AI. It seems obvious to me. The first DAW to use it will be #1. You just need an iota of imagination to see this.

Groove agent even allows me to save used audio samples in a folder with a preset. Audio files used in the drum machine cannot be saved in the pool and the Cubase project is considered non-portable.

Sounds like you need to get out & about more.

I don’t know about perfect, but it’s certainly my go to drum software by a long way. since getting it in the September sales
