How can I remove those pesky grey bar numbers that appear above every bar on every line. The grey boxes they’re in get in the way of editing when staves are close together. The Help file says just un-click “page” and/or “galley” in View, but that has no effect for me. And clicking the symbols in those grey boxes also seems to have no effect.

I think you’re referring to the system track, Norm. View > System Track, or Alt+T. You can also set the system track not to show in new projects by default in Preferences if you wish. (I personally have it switched off because I’m quite comfortable with selecting music, adding/deleting bars etc. using the various keyboard methods.)
