Nothing is wrong.
What you want to see is not the Dorico default option.
Go to Library>Notation Options>Note Grouping and choose this option…

An important point : the Notations Options doesn’t work very well before version 5.1.7 of Dorico.
You can also « force » the duration of your input to solve this kind of problem. (see Force duration in the manual).
“Make sure you’re on the latest version, which fixes one problem where Note Grouping didn’t work correctly, in certain circumstances.”

This solves the problem. But what if you want to represent a note as two quarter notes instead of one half note? Can you use both methods in the same song?
Just press the letter o to use force duration.
