Half value of the notes: is there a trick?

Hi!

How can I get the half value?
From this…

…getting this without changing every note:

Thanks!

I still can’t get this to work with triplets.

Would be swell if it worked. Triplets are conceptually tricky in Dorico…

Gareth, it doesn’t.
The only way is to trust insert mode not to lose anything; temporarily remove any tuplets; do the duration change; replace the tuplets.
(but it can get messy)

Personally I think sorting this kind of workflow is far more important that pandering to Finale refugees. :man_shrugging:

I wouldn’t call it

per se (I happen to think that the former Finale users are a valuable addition to our community here and bring an interesting viewpoint to the game) but, yeah, the triplet thing is definitely a little rough around the edges…

Of course it’s pandering. The undue haste with which changes have been made is evidence enough that resource has been diverted from previous plans.

It has been anything but hasty. This move by MakeMusic was in the works for a long time, and as usual Daniel knew what was coming long before we did. Yes, obviously the latest note entry features took development time, but it could not have been done at the last minute, as it might have seemed to us. And this deal involved a ton of other work we don’t even know about.

Hmm, I also wouldn’t call it pandering - it seems like a logical request, and in fact a consistent behavior to expect from the program. I can’t think of a good reason as to why you should not be able to shorten or extend the note value of a triplet in the same way you can other groups of selected notes.

I’ve never used Finale a day in my life and I would absolutely love it if I could convert an 8th note triplet to a 16th note triplet automatically, if my heart so desired. It would be much faster than un-tuplet-izing, then editing the durations, then re-tuplet-izing (all of which gets more complicated if your tuplet is right before a bar line).

It may be. But so are the (hundreds of?) other, equally logical, requests that have been sitting on the backlog for years, some of which would solve important problems that do not yet have reasonable workarounds.

Oh yes I understand, and didn’t meant this one should take a specific priority with the team. I just mean to say, I’ve never used Finale and regardless I see the benefit in saving time and consistency with note editing. We’ll get it eventually I’m sure :crossed_fingers:
