Yep, scrubbing, scratching that kind of stuff. After this was requested over a year ago I was hoping Halion would fill that pre Phalanx gap in sampleplayer-land. Guess there isn’t a high demand among Steinberg users for this kind of sample manipulation stuff.
Thanks again for the confirmation though!
Well, if it means anything, you have a +1 from me here. I am after anything that has to do with sample manipulation and to be honest, as cool and exciting as it is to have the new synths and presets in HALion 5, what excited me the most was the fade handles, slice player etc of the sample editor, that is the kinds of stuff I am really after, as well as performance, stability and an intuitive GUI, which HALion 5 has. In the future, presets and synths are nice, but I do personally hope to see more for the sample based functions added. I would personally LOVE to see sample processing, such as trim, crop, delete, normalise, remove DC offset etc, right in HALion. This would really save dragging and dropping in and out of HALion, into Cubase just to do these simple tasks, or spending the time loading and unloading out of an external sample editor, which in reality destroys the original sample, as it is destructive editing. If we can keep the original sample intact, and do the above processing on the loaded copy in HALion only, that would be fantastic!
Don’t give up the good fight Niles, keep pushing for the sample based stuff, as will I. There are many others out there too, but many don’t frequent message board, or forums and with HALion 5 only being released, mere hours ago, there isn’t enough user base to chime in on this new version, but give it time.
Well, scrubbing (speed/rate control) would be awesome as would the reverse and ping/pong control. I think you aren’t alone as I’m pretty sure this has been on the hot list since Halion was first released.
@ anyone who has it up and running…
Do we have MIDI out now?
Good to know I’m not the only one who wants to see extended sample edit and mangling tools within Halion
Let’s hope other (re)sample enthusiasts will chime in some day.
hmm… I guess I have to play with it, but that sounds confusing … where does the recorded MIDI output go? That sounds like MIDI out to me? But, why the extra step to drag/drop?
for the drum player midi module, there is no special steps needed, you can simply drag from the midi connector symbol icon, with the arrow pointing upwards, directly into Cubase, or onto your desktop, to get the midi pattern available for further editing.
When it comes to the flexphaser - user arp however, there is a slight extra step needed. Instead of the above, where you simply, drag from the icon into Cubase, or onto your desktop, you must click on the ‘record’ button beside it. It will light up showing that it is ready to accept in an incoming pattern. You then play the pattern you desire and it will be stored in a buffer, until you click this same record icon again, to stop recording. The icon will no longer illuminate and you can then drag the recorded sequence that is in the buffer right into Cubase, or onto your desktop from the midi connector symbol icon to get a dump of what you recorded. you can further tweak and edit to your liking, be it velocity, note length, note arrangement, swing etc, right from with the key editor. Very easy stuff!
In case you guys don’t realize as well, there is an opposite function, where one can drag midi back ‘in’ to HALion 5 for groove quantize reference. When dealing with the user arp and the drum player midi module, you can drag a midi file onto the midi icon, with the arrow pointing downward, instead of upwards, to accept a midi file, which will be used as a quantize reference for the arp and your programmed drum beats. Unfortunately, at the moment however, you cannot drag a midi file from your project arrangement onto this icon to have the above happen. This is something that is being looked into for the future, but for now, you must have an externally saved midi file available to do the above. If you wish to use midi from your arrangement, you will have to export it as a file first, then drag it back in. Hopefully this will be remedied in time.
I hope all this helped. Let me know if you are need of further assistance.
Ok, that’s kind of how I thought it would work… I think MIDI out is right up there with the speed/direction control for samples as my most desired FRs. Not a complaint mind you. Just that those would be tremendously powerful things.
NO scripting is the biggest disappointment. Oh well, I don’t think Halion will ever be a big 3rd party sampler, I’m ok with that but that is the biggest difference IMO to Kontakt.
Sorry but I don’t understand what you mean ,your surely getting confused , Kontakt is a sample player yes ? and relies on third party libraries to keep it a live yes ? what is halion 5 ? a sound creation system for you to creat your own sample programs and not just play other peoples samples .
I know which I prefer ,that’s why I bought H5 over kontakt even thou they are on a 50% sale . I like making my own stuff thanks and that is what I call a sampler
I have never had an issue buying online from the Steinberg store in Canada, perhaps something is up on your end? I got my Cubase 7 online too, back on release day in December, without issue. I hope you can get it figured out, as the update doesn’t come with a boxed version, you must get it online. It is only 1.4GB if you currently own HALion 4.
