I’m using Halion 7 as a VST inside Reaper to record some external analog synths. I’ve managed to get close but there are still some things I don’t understand. I have the Reaper tracks correctly routed to ensure midi and audio are going to the right places (I can clarify if needed)
My settings are Input Source: Input, Sample Mode: Auto Next, Start Midi Note-on, Port Omni, Stop Audio Thrshold -50db, Mapping As Played, Fill Gaps Fill Centered.
- I can see that when I press a key on my master keyboard, the external synth makes a sound and a level is present in the Halion 7 recorder.
- I’ve set up to record with start as midi note-on, and stop as audio threshold but doing this I get blank recordings.
- However, if I click pre/post and full range the sounds are recorded, but they are all cut off, i.e. not respecting the audio threshold.
- If I deselect Pre/Post, but make the trigger stop based on Midi Note-Off it works but again, the samples are cut off (not respecting the release)
- One last thing, if I set the start to audio threshold as well, everything works - except I lose the automatic naming of each note that I would have gotten with midi note-on.
It’s quite bizarre to the point where I don’t know what else I can try. Could this be a bug?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Additional observations:
- Everything I had difficulty with above works in standalone.
- It seems the VST version is quite buggy: e.g. I can’t type lowercase ‘a’, ‘d’,‘w’, or ‘x’ in the Record Folder or File Naming schemes fields in the recorder. It seems these keys are mapped to other things in the interface and being in a text input field doesn’t release them. Also, the delete and backspace keys don’t work in the same fields.
- For midi-on start, even though there is an input signal present on keypress this does not mean the signal will be recorded. A single note played triggering a mono b2600 synth will not be recorded resulting in an empty file.
- However! If I play 2 consecutive notes quickly, the 2nd note will be recorded.
- Audio Threshold start works fine but I lose the automatic key naming feature.
I’m new to Steinberg so I hope this is an ok place to report issues but I’m happy to do it elsewhere.
