Hanging piano keys

Hello, has anyone experienced hanging keys on the piano keyboard of Dorico for iPad when playing or inserting notes? I am sure it’s not a hardware issue, as any other virtual keyboard used in the same screen area is working just fine (Iconica Sketch, for instance). I have the full version of Dorico. Thank you for taking this into consideration.

Hi @Ionut_Pascu, and welcome to the Forum.
Yes I experienced this too. Try to change the size of the keyboard vertically and horizontally, to improve a little bit the lagging.

Thank you, Christian. Unfortunately the trick did (maybe) improve only a tiny bit the situation. I still presume it’s a bug that needs to be properly fixed. I hope the Steinberg team will read this.

Yes, the Team reads every post.

I know I can be impatient at times, and I don’t want to come across as someone who just complains. But with Dorico for iPad, I’m genuinely frustrated. it should have become my main composing tool, because I like sitting on the piano and not at my studios keyboard. Honestly, it feels unfair to charge money for it in its current state. The issue you described alone makes the app barely usable to me. —and it’s been like that for far too long. I’ve reported other problems before, too.

At this point, I’m hoping they’re rewriting the iPad version from scratch. Maybe that’s why the current version isn’t getting any better.

I occasionally get sticky keys on the desktop version also (6.1 pro). Usually I can press them several times until they turn off. Organists would call it a cipher, eh?

As far as I understand, the Dorico iPad version is actually the same as the desktop Elements version; there is a framework in iPadOS to allow this.
Only very few cosmetic changes and additional buttons are necessary to get the functionality on a touch device.

And still…we don’t get sticky keys on the desktop version… What is really frustrating is the fact that the Steinberg team doesn’t reply at least to acknowledge this real annoying issue.

… … which leads to the conclusion that it might have to do with Apple’s iPadOS/Qt framework and its peculiarities.

Of course. Another other hand, other companies solved this somehow (see the Notion non-sticky keyboard). Basically, I am forced to use Notion for note insertion and then use Dorico only afterwards, from the exported XML file. Not nice, Steinberg…

again, as quoted, this might be a 100 % Apple issue - which Steinberg might not be able to solve on its own.

If so, ask Presonus how they solved this for Notion. Easy

I don’t know anyone at Prosonus but I read today that they changed or merged with Fender.

We know that the Keyboard panel doesn’t work as smoothly as it should in Dorico for iPad. It is on our backlog to revisit this and to make it better, but I can’t provide a specific timeframe for when this will be done

This is better than nothing, thank you. Although, please put a red marker on this matter, as it it crucial for iPad (quick note input while traveling without a keyboard, for instance). It can’t be that hard to solve this mistery, I hope…

You don’t need to hope, you need (I suggest) to trust the mazing Dorico Team

I agree that the Dorico team is amazing. And from what I’ve read it is not a simple task to correct it.
But I have to say that I’m a little bit frustrated. It reads and feels like something that has no priority. And it would be ok. But Dorico for iPad ist STILL something that feels like a beta. And I’m not talking about shiny new stuff like Pen support, but the other things mentioned here in the forum. It took month to correct the fader behaviour of the mixer. If there are no resource to make it workable I’m fine. But then Steinberg should not sell permanent licenses.
