Hard newline on staff?

Hi

I have a number of pieces where it is important to me that the number of bars on a line are as they were in my Finale files. This has disappeared during the conversion.

How do I insert a line break in Dorico?

Welcome to the forum, @nfoldager — and to using Dorico!

You’ll be working with System Breaks to achieve this. These can be individually created, or set up over larger chunks of a flow as Casting Off.

I think this will be very helpful:

Also if perchance you want the same number of bars on each line, you can set that in Layout Options > Staves and Systems > Casting Off, and not bother with manual system breaks.

Thank you to judddanby and Mark.

How about the opposite: If I want Dorico to delay a System Break?
For example, if Dorico has put 6 bars on a line and I want 8 (on the actual line, not the whole piece)

Best regards,
Niels.

like in Finale, you can move measures backward and forward.

If you require moving a bar back, in Engrave mode, select the last thing in the last measure you want to move back a system, and press “,” (comma.)

Likewise, to move a measure forward, press the period key.

You can also move beats back and forth, having partial measures on pages. Select an item midway through a measure to achieve this.

You’ll need to turn off this Preference (Dorico menu on Mac, Edit menu on Windows) if you want to shunt partial measures back and forth.

The basic method is Make Into System, in engrave mode. Moving a bar with , does the same thing, but it’s good to understand how that works.

Ah, mine might have been by default inactive, because I don’t remember ever setting that.
Thank-you for the clarification.

I am not finding this to work for moving measures back and forth between systems. I have the snap preference toggled off:

So I have a measure like this:

and I want it to send the chord with the selected note (the last chord on the system) to the next measure. When I press ., it does this:

I can create a system break at that location and manually move that partial measure to the next system, but that is a messy process that tends to undo layout edits I’ve already done. Any help as to what I’m missing?

It should work by typing Shift+S instead of .

Thanks a lot, that worked just great to move it to the next measure. Would you know the shortcut for moving to the previous measure?

It’s , But like ., it won’t break a bar. If your aim is a bar split, I belive you need to use system breaks (Shift+S).
