Have I done a mistake with HALion Sound Library? I suppose I have

I am afraid I have done a mistake…
I have been originally a Dorico 2 user since <march 2019… Then I uploaded to 3.0 and, a month ago, to Dorico 3.5
I had been using Dorico only to write music to be played live but after uploading to Dorico 3.5 I have started working with the Play Mode.
I should say that in these topics I am a complete beginner.

I found out that for some reasons I could not load sounds from Halion Symphonic Orchestra.
Halion Symphonic Orchestra They were listed in the VST possibilities but no way to load them in an instrument track.
When I tried to open it the outcome was no sound was present.
I don’t know if this is from the beginning or not, I mean since when I downloaded Dorico 2 3 or 3.5
I didn’t pay to much attention to that because I was, and I am, into working with Spitfire Lybraries, and the connected Expression Maps problems.
All of this is beginning to work out well now, thanks to the Forum help.
I planned to check into the problem when I will br finished with what I have to do now.

Yesterday I have found a STEINBERG folder in the downloads section of my Mac dated May 21st which is the day of my upgrade to Dorico 3.5.

There is an Halion Symphonic Orchestra Installer in this folder.

So i have run it. It seemed I had acquired the sounds.
Just gave a very fast test on a couple of instruments and yes, the sounds seemed to be there.

Then I opned Steinberg Library Manager opened and I did something I have wanted to do for a long time.
That is: to move the libraries to an external drive.
I moved everything I found listed.
Then I opened a project that was supposed to work only with Halion sounds.
And here is my problem.
It’s a mess, it does not play all of the sounds it is supposed to play during playback and it seems the appropriate Expression Maps are not working as they should. Sounds stop, or play louder, shorter…

I don’t know how to solve that.
I could bring back the libraries when they were before, but I don’t know where they were. I know, it sounds childish! Or I could do something different, but I don’t know what.
Hope I can get some advice and I thank you all, in advance.
Plus, while all of this happened I was just going to start with the download of Cubase Pro 10.5 trial version.
I have not even pushed the button, because I don’t understand if I would be making a much greater mess.
But this very last is a step that I have to do absolutely.
Thank you
Gianni

You don’t actually need the Halion Symphonic Orchestra plugin. That is a very old plugin that is basically just HALion Sonic SE that can only load the HSO sounds. It hasn’t been updated for a long time and we don’t recommend using it any more. All the HSO sounds can be loaded by the regular HALion Sonic SE. I think the old plugin isn’t installed by our later installers.

The most useful thing to know is that if you run into problems with the playback sounds, choose Play > Playback Template to reset back to the HSSE+HSO default and this should load all the HSO instruments inside HSSE. If it doesn’t load HSO sounds then that suggests there’s an installation problem we need to sort out.

Paul thank you for your reply.
I have understood concerning Halion Symphonic Orchestra plugin. I did not not about it.
I have done what you suggest (actually I had already done it yesterday9
Sounds load but they behave very strangely during playback… long notes become short … dynamics… There is something odd.
Also in another project with all Spitfire Sounds and only one Halion intrument there is something strange.
I attach a Diagnostic.
If it is possible to examine it I would appreciate

Related questions from my previous

  1. May I leave the sounds where they are or is there a chance somewhere to see where they used to be, and eventually restore the original position, if this is better?
  2. What do I have to do with the folder Steinberg folder in my downloads folder?

thank you for your time
Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.13 MB)

If you have moved the samples to another disk with the Steinberg Library Manager then that should be fine. HSSE can load the sounds from the new location. The old HSO plugin couldn’t do this, which is one of the reasons why we recommend not using it now. However, if you are going to use the HSO sounds a lot then I would consider moving just the HSO samples back onto your main disk (assuming you have an SSD) as they will be very slow to load from an external hard disk.

Once you know that everything is correctly installed and working correctly then I think you can delete the Steinberg folder inside Downloads.

For the problems with note lengths and dynamics, please attach a small project that shows the problem. You can attach a project if you zip it up first.

Yes, thanks…
The problem is that the file we are talking about contains a video and it is 4.9 Mega. I manage to detach the video but not to eliminate it from the project. It’s weight is still 4.9. And it is too big to be attached.

Can you use dropbox, wetransfer, google drive?

Yes of course. The link is ready. I would prefer to sent it by 'private message, may I ?

Yes, please do.

The first project plays back with no problems for me. The second one I can only play back some instruments as I don’t have the same Kontakt libraries. Some of the BBC SO libraries have the wrong instruments loaded - ‘05 clarinet discover’ loads as ‘violins 1’ for me. However, I don’t have the BBCSO discover library (only Core), so I don’t know if that’s expected.

Can you create a minimal score that shows the exactly what the problem is? If you create a score with just an ensemble of string section players then does that play correctly?

I see …
On the first one I have some problems here and there… I’ll prepare something to be checked (hoping to have the problem showing up)

Second One … Clarinet 05 seemed ok, loadind the right instrument … but that is not the problem …

I’ll send something tomorrow.

Thank you very much for your time
