Hi everyone, I’ve been trying to create a custom microtonality system for a piece using those specific microtones:
+/- 16 c. (12th of tones)
+/- 33 c. (6th of tones)
+/- 66 c. (3rds of tones)
+/- 50 c. (quarter tones)
+/- 100 c. (regular sharp and flats).
I am having so much trouble figuring out how to do that in Dorico because I can’t use anything other than whole numbers for my pitch delta. Even if I get my octave division correct (33 instead of 12) I can’t change the pitch delta as I would like. Can anybody help ?
This seems to be 72 EDO. Your octave division would be 72, not 33.
The number 72 would be entered into Key Signatures, Tonality Systems, and Accidentals > Tonality System > New Tonality System or Edit Tonality System > “Divisions per Octave” field. In the “Divisions for specific Intervals” fields below this, the half step interval fields must contain the number 6, and the whole step interval fields must contain the number 12. In the column “Accidental”, click New Accidental or Edit Accidental. For each accidental, enter 0, 1, 2, 3, … 11 or -1, -2, -3, … -11 in the “Pitch delta” field, in the upper right corner.
Except for the natural sign (Pitch delta = 0), sharp sign (Pitch delta = 6), and flat sign (Pitch delta = -6), you’ll have to find or draw the symbols for the other accidentals. 72 EDO has enough interest that there is at least one notation system for it, the Maneri-Sims notation.
