Guys, I’m looking for some help. I’ve a load of old projects from ancient versions of Cubase which are .ALL extensions. I’m wanting to resurrect them but as I’m using Cubase 12 now on an MI chip Mac and it cannot read this old file type.
The solution is to download Cubase SE 3, SL 3 or SX 3, import the .ALL file and then save a copy as .CPR.
My problem is that none of these versions run on an M1 chip. They only work via Rosetta on Intel based Macs.
So I was looking to see if anyone who has one of the versions listed above would be willing to take my files and convert them for me through their version? There are 14 files in all and are all just midi tracks so no cumbersome audio to slow things down.
I’d really appreciate it if anyone would be able to take the time out to help.
Saying all that, I’m surprised Steinberg don’t provide an online converter to do these projects.
Thanks for reading.

I’m not sure what you mean by this. Rosetta is the Intel x64 emulation that runs on M-based Mac systems. If you have an Intel Mac you don’t need Rosetta.
Have you tried to start one of these releases in Rosetta mode on your M1?
Sadly Juergen Rosetta doesn’t appear as an option. The Cubase SX installer brings up a message saying “The disk you attached was not readable by this computer”. And I don’t have an external drive attached. The options are ignore and eject. I’ve tried both options and nothing. I’ve also tried SE but it has the same result. I’ve also searched to download a copy of Rosetta because Apple’s online support documents suggest that it can be installed independently and how to install it but stupidly don’t provide a link to where to download it. So I’ve exhausted every option I can think of - hence the cry for help.

I’m sorry, but that is something where I’m not helpful.
I do not use Apple devices anymore, I just know that you need Rosetta for Intel code based applications. No idea how to get that from Apple.
That disk error has nothing to do whatsoever with Rosetta. Rosetta only kicks in when it needs to run a binary compiled for an Intel machine, meaning, when you actually run the application.
That message is the file itself, meaning your download is corrupted, its a disk format the Mac can’t read, etc…
The real answer is, the SX3 installer cant be opened because it’s in the old HFS format that Apple decided we didn’t need to be able to read anymore. It needs to be opened on an old Mac (maybe pre-Catalina?) or you need to install a third party utility to read HFS volumes.
That’s strange. I’ve downloaded the installers direct from Steinberg and tried three different versions of the software with the same results. My one last hope is a MacBook I gave my parents years ago that must be pre-Catalina. Fingers crossed. I’m just annoyed that Steinberg don’t provide some sort of tool to migrate projects. Anyways - live and learn and all that.
Thanks Juergen for your help. I’m just hoping someone with a legacy version of SX will reach out and volunteer converting them for me!
I use an ‘app’ called MacFUSE that lets me read the old HFS file system. I ran into it a few years back when I wanted to use one of my old Zero-G sample cds heh. It has a data track on it that has all the samples already cut up and split but my Mac wouldn’t mount that part of the disc and just loaded up the audio cd portion in Apple Music. Have a bunch of old retail games and stuff still on cd, and even some of my old audio project backups on CD-R that cant be read without either MacFUSE or breaking out my G5 or something.
Thank you for that info but I’m afraid it’s above my skill set!
I found an old MacBook running Catalina and tried installing SX with no joy.
Then I installed v. 8.0 which loaded fine… but it needed my USB copy protection dongle to run it. And that I threw out last year when v. 12 went fully online versification.
So it’s just going round in circles.

Ahh well, without the dongle the whole thing is pretty futile… The dongle has your license for everything from Cubase 11 on down, without it, you wont be able to open anything.
I had moved to Logic Platinum/Pro by then, but was SX3 available for OS 9? I have my old Titanium Powerbook sitting here, but I don’t have OS X installed on it, just 9.2.2.
Yes I’m pretty buggered without the dongle. I’d run a closed system for years on Cubase 8.5 to ensure stability until the Steinberg/Yamaha I/o unit failed last year meaning nothing worked. Steinberg refused to help telling me that they didn’t support 8.5 and that the unit couldn’t work with 8.5 anyway. I upgraded to 12 which wouldn’t run on my then Mac. So new Mac bought but the I/o device still didn’t work. So replaced it and found all VSTs and plugins no longer ran on v. 12 and they needed upgraded. More expense. Then both my audio drive and backup external drives failed at the same time which meant I’d basically lost the past 15/20 years recordings. The only thing I’ve been able to salvage is these 14 .ALL files. Talk about disaster after disaster!
But no, SX needs OS 10 so I was able to install it on that MacBook but it won’t do anything without the dongle. So no progress at all. I’m going to wing off a support request to Steinberg now but will not be holding my breath. I’ll update with their response.
