Help with connecting an external midi module to Cubase Via an Audio Interface Please?

Hi,

I am using Cubase Artists 11 with a keyboard controller. And I also have the sound routed through an audio interface which in this case is the Tascam US-4x4HR.

I have been using VSTs exclusively for my production in Cubase, but I now need to revive some old tracks recorded long ago created using sounds from a Midi sound module/synth, in this case the Emu Proteus 1.

I have a Midi-out cable coming from the Audio interrace and going to the Midi-in of the Proteus, but from there on I am lost.

I also have two TRS jack cables plugging into the back of the Proteus because this is a stereo instrument. But I don’t know where to insert those cables into my Audio interface? I am concerned that maybe I should be using only one of the 4 inputs at the front of the Tascam, instead of two.

And if I plug the two cables into two of the inputs on the Tascam, how then do I have the Proteus 1 configured in Cubase to show as one stereo audio instrument track instead of two separate Mono audio tracks?

I don’t want to risk overloading the audio interface, or not routing the sound coming from the Proteus into Cubase correctly for rendering and mixing. I am also concerned that somehow the two cables if not connected and set-up properly in Cubase may result in a sound imbalance.

Could anyone please give me some pointers as to how to begin to set this up so that everything works as it should.

P’s. I also am aware that certain features regarding the set up and use of external midi instruments are only available in Cubase Pro, but I’m hoping that one of you kind individuals may have a solution that might work with Cubase Artist as well.

Thanks very much for reading,

Cliff

You are absolutely on the right path and are just overthinking things a bit.

In the Cubase’s Audio Connections created a Stereo Input Bus…

… and assign the device ports to the two Tascam channels that you have connected the two audio cables to.

Then just create a stereo audio track in Cubase and set its input to the Input Bus that you have just created.
That ought to do the trick.

Hi Johnny_Moneto,

That’s awesome!

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at this, and for offering me this solution so quickly. I’ll give it a go right now.

All the best,

Cliff
