Hello all! I want to create a time signature in Dorico 5 that displays the meter, then the beat divisions in parentheses, like so: 10/8 (3+3+4). This is a common thing to see in 20th-century music, and I’m hoping there’s a way to do it in this program.
In the time signature popover, just enter [3+3+4]/8
Thank you! This hugely helps with beaming. However, it still displays as 10/8. Is there a way to make the time signature actually display as 10/8 (3+3+4)?
If you remove the brackets, it will show as 3+3+4 / 8. which is more typical of what I’ve seen. I’ve never seen both a meter and compound meter simultaneously. I don’t know if there’s a way to do that.
Edited to correct the meter input format. I misremembered.
Ahhh sorry, I was imagining something else. I can’t remember off the top of my head.
That is closer to what I was looking for. Is there a way to modify it’s appearance?
If I wanted to indicate that the beat groupings are 3+3+4 in the first measure, but didn’t want to indicate that every time I came back to 10/8. That’s what I’m aiming for.
To have both a 10/8 time signature and a parenthetical helper, I think you’d need to enter the time signature with the brackets (to get the proper note grouping) and then add the helper as system text, formatted to look the same as the time signature. I don’t think it’s possible to have a time signature without a denominator.
You might make a feature request for this. It might help to have links to published examples.
Personally, I think if you show the additive time signature on the first bar and then 10/8 after that with the proper note grouping (via the bracket entry) then the intent is just as clear.
Hi @Joswabi, you could also write it out using text and a font like MusGlyphs:
Or just with text, inserting music text (right click into the text editor):
Or using note values (with MusGlyphs or inserting music text):
