Hide rest under cue in anacrusis

Is there a way to hide the rest under a cue in an anacrusis?

I already selected the layout option to hide bar rests under cues, but the rest in the anacrusis stubbornly stays there:

Is there some neat workaround to get rid of the rest? It forces the stem of the note up, causing some weird layouting there.

Speaking of it, it would be nice if I could also get rid of the rests when the cue ends and the regular notes take over:

You could just select them and then Edit→Remove Rests

Now that’s really strange:
When I select the first note after those two quarter rests and try to activate the “Starts voice” property, the property will not stay on but immediately switch back.
But when I select the two rests and do “Edit > Hide Rests”, the rests are gone and the “Starts voice” property of the first regular note is active.

How? I thought, all the “Hide Rests” command does is set this property (together with “Ends voice” of any prevous note)?

Not only does the rest belong in the pick-up measure, but there should be (full bar) rests in the other cued bars as well.

You might want to check some printed music to see how this is correctly handled.

In wind band music it is quite common to put in cues so one player can help out in case there are not enough (or not strong enough) players on the original instrument.
And it’s common to omit rests in those cases, especially if the cue spans many bars, as they would add too much noise and make the music less readable.

It’s a real use case, so there’s a reason for Dorico having the option to omit those rests

(And yes, I took the time to check “printed music” before writing this answer, just to be sure.)

I did that and at first was happy with the solution - until I saw that in the score, where the cues are configured to not show, the bars are (of course) completely empty now :joy:

So back to the team: Please add an option to not only remove whole bar rests but also all other rests under a cue. Pretty-please?

My recollection from wind band days is that these “cues for playing” are shown in the score as well (so that the conductor knows who might be covering). Would it work for you here to set cues to show in the score?

One way to hide the quarter rests under a cue is to use the Color property to make them transparent. This property is a local property, so it can be changed in the part without affecting the score.

Yes, this would indeed be my preferred solution - the only caveat being that Dorico currently does not condense players with cues. So when Trumpets 1+2 have cues for Flugelhorn 1+2, I do always get separate staves for them. You can’t even force Dorico to put them on the same staff via a Condensing Change - it won’t let you hit “Apply”.

The best workaround would probably be to not use the cue tool at all in this case and scale the notes manually instead. Aaaaand… That’s what I tried right now and it worked great!

Thanks everybody for commenting and helping even around Christmas!
