HornForHire - For Better Or For Worse

Here’s another romantic, cinematic piece, titled For Better Or For Worse

Instruments:

  • Spanish guitar
  • Keyscape (harpsichord, piano)
  • Arturia Mini V2 (synth)
  • GPO (violins, violas, cellos)

I made good use of the tempo track, to give it a natural feel.

Let me know what you think!

Cheers,
Wim

Hi Wim,
firstly, thanks for sharing, it’s always good to hear new music.
A couple of observations.
I use GPO for strings, too, and I always find the high strings to be a bit thin at times. Generally, I’ll double them with the full string instrument as well just to get a bigger sound. I say this because, to me, the opening phrases needed more body.
Secondly, the music itself is very nice and I get what you were doing, I would have preferred more colour with the harmonic structure (9ths and other suspensions etc) plus the use of other orchestral instruments.

All the best
Jonathan

Lovely composition and arrangement!

Thoughts: Dynamically it felt a little flat, maybe that was your intent, but at around 1:32 I did feel there was potential here for a significant dynamic shift - cymbal swells, crash, added weight by bringing in some basses, even timpanis, and doubling up on the melody etc etc - all with the intent of creating a bit of a crecendo and providing an overall emotional lift in the piece. But that is is of course just my taste and preference! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for the reply!
I usually go with the string sections from GPO instead of the solo parts since they sound fuller, but I’ll give doubling them with the full strings a try.
I kept the arrangement pretty sparse on purpose—I just felt like it fit better with what I was going for.

Thanks for listening and for the tips!

Cheers,
Wim

Hi Ian,

Thanks!

I get what you’re saying, but that wasn’t the direction I was going for with this piece.
I deliberately kept the arrangement sparse, like I said to Jonathan, but I’ll keep your ideas in mind for the next pieces I work on.

Cheers,
Wim
