How about being able to create MIDI port 'groups'?

TLDR: Let’s have an option to create named groups of MIDI ports.

I asked for this many years ago. I’ll try again…

Wouldn’t it be a useful feature to be able to create ‘groups’ of MIDI ports? The ‘In All MIDI’ feature is fine, but it’s an ‘all or nothing’ option - effectively one ‘group’.

No, I don’t want my Roli Seaboards to be included in ‘All MIDI’, but I would like to be able to use them for my MPE-capable instruments. As it is I have to exclude them from ‘All MIDI’ and allocate them individually on separate tracks. If I could allocate them to an ‘MPE Controllers’ MIDI port group, and select this group as the track input, then it would solve this.

Or how about grouping velocity-sensitive and non-velocity keyboards? Or channel aftertouch/poly aftertouch, keyboards/bass pedals, left-hand side of the studio/right-hand side, full-sized keys/mini-keys…

Also, how about being able to group MIDI output ports too? Maybe I could create a ‘String Machines’ group and play them all simultaneously via a single track, from a single keyboard.

To me this seems a worthwhile development and improvement of the inflexible ‘In All MIDI’ feature, which is essentially a single MIDI port ‘group’.

Anyone else feel the same, or can anyone shoot the idea down with something I’ve not considered?:red_question_mark:

Just me, then…:upside_down_face:

Nope, not the only one. I have a Roland e kit and an Edrumin trigger to midi interface that I would love to group unstead of using all midi which can trigger other sounds. I would also like to group my keyboards as well. Really, anything that I think of as an “instrument”. Cakewalk Sonor has had this ability for years. I miss it.

I have a MOTU Midi Express XT(XT model works with or without a computer)…8 channels in and 8 channels out and 16 Midi channels per each of those channels. Might want to give it a look

I don’t understand what you are getting at. In fact I have a pair of MOTU 128 interfaces. That doesn’t help at all with grouping ports in Cubase. I think you may have misunderstood what I am asking for.

I use bidule pre-daw and virtual ports for this sort of thing (for many years now), but I do find your proposal interesting and it would indeed be useful for multi-controller situations.

Yeah, I misunderstood what you’re trying to achieve…I personally would have no need for this as I play one device at a time and just do it by channel. Sorry I couldn’t help

Glad there are others that see the value of MIDI device groups. In the scheme of things I could imagine this would be a relatively simple development - similar to how we can create groups of plug-ins right now.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this requested before. (Was it by me?!) Anyway, it’s a solid FR and I support it fully.
:+1:

I’ve certainly asked before. It’s not the most exciting feature request, but I believe that many would find it useful.
