How can I edit a note without impacting the following bars?

I am trying to edit notes within one bar, but every change I make shifts the whole thing that comes after. I’ve been creating additional empty bars to avoid that but I wonder if there are better solutions, one that stops the automatic adjustment of following bars?

At some point you’ve turned on Insert mode. Hit I to turn it off, or click its icon in the left panel.
