Hi there, I’m a new born baby at Dorico after using Finale for more than 10 years intensely. I can’t figure out how can I hide the staff name before every staves. Thanks for your help:)
Welcome to the forum!
You are probably viewing the Score layout, not the Part layout. The score layout shows all names by default, and the Part layout does not.
You can change this behavior for any layout by using Layout Options. Cmd-Shift-L.
Select the layout(s) you wish to change, then on the left, choose the Staves and Systems submenu. You can show or hide staff labels there.
You can change the settings for multiple layouts at once if desired.
Thanks for the swift reply! Is there any other way to get to the Layout Options? This very obvious one doesn’t work, when I press ctr+Shift+L, a dialog box pops up at the right top of the screen saying something on my mother language what I cannot understand:))))
You can check what shortcuts you have set. Go to Edit>Preferences>Key Commands and search for Layout Options
You can change them here if you want to (but I would advise only doing that when you get to know Dorico as the default short cuts are insanely logical)
It took ages, but finally got it. Many many thanks!
This sounds as if you had more than one language installed in your OS, or some other application is highjacking this shortcut globally.
Maybe you can deactivate the configured shortcut there
Yes, this is exactly what happens, but it wasnt like this till yesterday. Finally managed adding a new shortcut thanks to dozens of Youtube tutorial and you both.
Dorico looks fabulous in the morning day 2, the only thing what worked for me better in Finale is the way of hiding notes and rests occasionally. I’ve colored the notes white, and it works, but in addition the staff line turns to white where the whitened notes are, what looks a bit like a printing error…
There are much better ways to hide notes! Set custom scaling to 1%, and/or make them transparent.
Can you give us an example of what you’re trying to achieve? In Finale, you often had to create effects by hiding things and adding expressions, but it’s possible that it might be simpler in Dorico.
Here, you could have all the notes belonging to the top staff (with manual beaming splits as needed), then simply cross the lower notes down to the bottom staff. Dorico will hide the rests on the bottom staff automatically.
Hide occasional notes using the hide notehead and hide stem properties.
Hide rests using Edit>Remove Rests
No need to colour white, or even shrink to 1% (though that can be useful sometimes)
Oh, lovely! Can I ask you to give a full plan how to get there? In a grand scheme I get it and seems smart, but can’t see how to get there in details:(
The remove rests command is under the Edit menu. Many folks create a key command for this (I use shift-alt-R)
Properties are in the lower panel. Hiding notes is done in Engrave mode.
What is shown there will depend on the current selection. If you select a note the panel will show…
and you can set the properties I highlight. If your note has an accidental, you can hide that too. etc.
Hide Rests is an Edit menu option in Write mode.
Hide Notes and Hide Rests (as shown by Janus above) are switches in the Properties Panel in Engrave mode. (Select the notes first.)
Here’s a quick example showing how to get notes on both piano staves without rests (no hiding noteheads or stems or removing rests required) by using the cross-staff functionality, plus a bit of stem direction flipping.

All the notes were input in the same up-stem voice on the top staff. I split the beam after the first quaver, then just repeated that pattern and repitched notes as required. Selected the separate quaver, and crossed it down to the bottom staff (key command M).
To flip stem directions, that’s F.
Aww, thank you so much for the thorough reply, I’ve solved it!
I really feel like excavating a tunel with Dorico, but even full darkness around, the soil is mild and full with hope and promise. Looks like a lovely enterpise:)))

Press N to cross notes over to the top staff; and M to cross them to the bottom staff. (This is like Alt up/down on a selection in Finale, IIRC.)
Ahem… What about the hide notehead and hide stem properties in Engrave mode ?
[Sorry, I answered while reading the thread and of course, this was pointed out later…]
