How do I add a Title to my Project/Why are some of the note heads RED?

I am trying to figure out how to add the title to my piece of music. I am using the free version of Dorico 5 for the trial experience. So far, I LOVE IT! Even with the free version, one would think you could add a title. The videos I have found talk about icons and things I do not see in my tool bar on the left. Is this because it’s the “Free” version?

Also some of my note heads are RED. I saw a discussion about that in this forum. My upper right menu does not have View, Engrave Window, Hub, Help, Script. Is this because its the free version as well?

I am writing a Jazz bass method book, so there is simply one instrument…The Bass. I have added all the notes, but I can’t add Chord Changes, add a title, add the metronome marking of quarter note = 146 and some of the notes are red. Can anybody help me? Thank you in advance!

Are you using the iPad version of Dorico?

As for the red notes, those generally mean out of range notes.

HI Michel,
No, I am using what I have on my Macbook Air. I did not specifically choose the iPad version, so I don’t think that is what I have. I guess I don’t understand the “Out of Range” description. I transcribed a walking bass line and the notes are in bass clef. The ledger line notes I have inputted are black but some of the other notes inputted directly on the staff which is in bass clef are red. I’m not sure why the program is recognizing those bass notes as out of range? Thank you for your help.

To add a title, open File > Project Info to fill out the desired info in the Project Page. Bets not to type these directly onto a given page, as it creates an Override and limits what Dorico can subsequently do.

Remember that double bass transposes by octave regardless whether one is viewing the transposed or concert pitch score. If the bottom bass notes are turning red, I would immediately suspect one might be typing them into the wrong octave.

If by “Free Version” you mean Dorico SE, it does not have all the menus that the Pro version has. If one decides to use the 60-day Trial Version (which is different from SE), definitely load the Pro version. One can then, by holding down modifier keys, sample the SE or Elements versions.

Thank you Derrek! Your solution for adding a title worked for the second project I just finished of my Walking Bass Lines Book. I did exactly as you instructed and the title of the tune and the composer showed itself on the project. Oddly, when I went to repeat the same process for the first “Untitled Project 1” …it did not respond the same way.Hmmm…Idk?

On my second transcription I did today, as far as red notes are concerned…It’s just a few bars where the notes are F, F#, G and A above the bass clef staff where the notes are red or dark red today, LOL! The first transcription page is riddled with red notes not above the staff. I am not sure how to fix it.
Yes, I kinda figured it might be the version I have for now as to why I cannot insert Chord changes above the measures. I will do that after I make the upgrade. thank you for your help! I appreciate it!

Kurt

Hi Kurt – welcome to the forum!

In Dorico SE, you don’t have access to Engrave mode or any of the more detailed editing tools included in Dorico Pro, including editing page templates.

Page templates are how Dorico puts information on pages, using frames for music, text, and graphics.

Text information appears on pages by way of tokens, which mostly display information that you’ve entered in Project Info, or other general info (like page numbers or the time and date).

In your other project, it’s possible that the page didn’t appear to update because you added the title to the Flow, rather than the Project (there are multiple pages in Project Info: your selection on the left determines what thing you’re adding information for).

If you don’t want to see colours for notes that Dorico considers to be difficult or out of range for that instrument, you can turn them off.

You absolutely can input a variety of notations in Dorico SE, see below for:

And finally, as a new user, you might benefit from working through our First Steps guide – it’s intended to introduce beginners to key Dorico functionality and concepts.

John Barron also worked through the guide in video form:

Hi Lillie!
My apologies for not replying sooner. Thank you sooooo much for the very helpful directions! I have been inputing chord above measures ALL DAY today thanks to you. I was also able to easily turn off the colored notes as well. Yes, super easy once I knew where to find the proper commands to do so. Next up is to watch the videos you suggested! I understand once I upgrade more tools will be available. I still need to add the metronome markings in the upper left of each tune. I am 129 bars into a 300 bar tune of walking bass line quarter notes! So, I will find the met marking as soon as I get this tune finished as far as I can take it. Thanks to you, I think I stumbled on how to add different letters to each 16 bar section of this particular tune. Shift plus other letters let me add different things. Anyway, back to work! Thank you once again for the help and the kind words!
Best regards,
Kurt

To enter a metronome marking: In Write mode, Shift+T opens the Tempo popover, then type 6=100 (for quarter note = 100; [the number corresponds to the note value just like when entering notes]), then ENTER. To change the number, open the bottom Properties panel and adjust. You can also enter a text marking, show/hide either text or metronome mark (or both), adjust if you want parenthesis or “ca.”, etc. Lots of options available. Very easy to use. Watch the First Steps tutorials!

Hi DW,
Thank you as well! Yes, I was able to insert a tempo, ie. “quarter note =217” but with the actual quarter note character. In terms of layout, it’s not quite in the position I want it to be in the upper left…but at least your suggestion showed me how to do it. Now I am trying to figure out how to notate quarter note triplets. I will continue watch the First Steps tutorials…maybe that will help me. Thanks again!
