I use a few Sketch staves that route to full strings and a few ensemble patches etc. in my instrument library. There’s also retrospective recording but I don’t use that at all. Others may have ideas around that.
To search, there’s a magnifying glass to the left of you user avatar at the top right of the page.
Thanks for the reply, derAbgang!
I don’t know what Sketch staves are.
And, I’m a newbie to Dorico 5.
Please provide step by step instructions to simulate the functionality of the Ideas windows from Sibelius.
Thank you.
For jotting down ideas, I think some people also create a separate flow in the project. You can add players to that flow which don’t appear in the main flow, and you can keep the flow out of your main full score.
Hi asherber,
I understand how to create a new project. I don’t know how to create another flow inside the main project. I need 40 of these for each of my 40 ideas.
Help!
I don’t think you want to use a different flow for each idea, although you could do things that way. You might want to have just one flow for ideas, and then put different ideas into it, separated by blank measures.
You create a new flow in Setup mode by typing Shift+F or clicking the Add Flow button in the lower panel.
Thanks again, asherber.
I did what you suggested and it worked.
Since I haven’t tried inputting ideas into this new flow (the ideas flow, not the main flow), there may be more questions as things come up. I loved the full functionality of Ideas in Sibelius.
I’m hoping that Dorico has similar or better functionality. Feel free to comment on this.
Best,
Larry
I think you are one of a very few. IIRC there’s a thread somewhere where Daniel suggested they would not be doing it again in Dorico.
(You search the forum using the magnifying glass top right of the forum screen)
In Setup, when you add a player, you can choose Sketch instruments. For Strings/Winds/Brass these are just grand staff instruments that playback appropriate sounds. Great for sketching ideas.
I am writing for classical guitar and voice and need to hear the guitar playback.
What is the difference between working in an ideas flow (where I capture the ideas and then import them into the main project) and the Sketch staves function?
Thanks,
Larry
New information!! (Ignore advice about sketch instruments)
Just setup for Voice and Guitar. Every flow you add will automatically include these.
(In addition to using Setup mode to add new flows, you can also (in Write mode) select the final barline of a flow and use write>split flow to create a new one).
I use a separate flow for ideas and just add a rehearsal mark (sometimes with an explanatory comment) to delineate each.
Hi @larrysuccess, following the various advices of the previous posts I made an Idea Flow, that you can download, and put somewhere in your hard-drive. In a new project you can then import this flow (menu File > Import > Flows…), merging the players, and you can start inputting your ideas on the 40 little chunks, that I prepared (each chunk has a placeholder 4/4 time signature, that you can change, then every chunk starts with bar 1, ends with a double barline, and is numerated with rehersal marks. You can of course add or delete bars, change key, and so on, as desired).
Thank you for your amazing help Christian-R!!
I watched the video and imported your flow into my project. I assume I can simply copy and paste anything from the ideas flow into the project. Right?
Best,
Larry
