How do I change rastral size and vertical staff spacing of individual systems?

Need to change rastal size and scale the vertical staff spacing of individual systems. How is that done?

If you select the System Break signpost, you can set the space size in the Properties panel. You can’t directly pick a rastral size, so you’ll need to do the math to figure out the size in your favorite measurement unit.

Staff spacing is defined in terms of spaces, so it should scale when you change the space size.

Thanks, but I have a question:
Why does changing the staff space for any system on the page change all of the systems and not just the one I am adjusting?

Also, changing the staff spacing at a frame break squahses all of my pages thereafter (instead of just adjusting the spacing for that page only).

It’s like other “changes” in Dorico – the change is in effect until you tell it otherwise. So if you only want to change the space size for one system, you need one system break to set your new size, and then another on the next system to turn off the change.

The rastral change in the frame/system break will be valid for the rest of the flow. That’s by design. If you want to go back to the former rastral after this system (or a few), you need to insert another S/F break somewhere and reset the rastral.

I think it is valid for all subsequent flows as well, since space size is a layout option. But I may be mistaken.

But that space size change occurs to both systems on that page, no matter which one I am changing via the properties panel.

The space size will affect every system until either the next flow or the next System Break/Frame Break that changes/resets the space size property.

Same as a Note Spacing Change, or a Condensing Change, or an Instrument Change.

This description does not comport with my experience here:

As you can see, when I select the 2nd system on the page, it resizes both systems.

It’s a little hard for me to see what’s going on in your video, because all of your staves look kind of small to begin with.

Here’s a screen grab showing:

  1. Add a system break on second system
  2. Change the space size from 3.6pt to 2.6 pt – all the following staves get smaller
  3. Add a system break on the third system
  4. Change the space size back to 3.6 – all the following systems get bigger again

Space size

In the video I have 2 systems on the page.
When I select the second one and change the size, it resizes both systems.

(And while we’re talking about this, here’s an embedded feature request: it would be nice if I could reset a space size change the same way that I can reset a note spacing change. As it is, if I subsequently change the layout default space size, that will only affect systems before any change in a break, since all the subsequent changes are explicit – even if they’re explicitly set to the same value as the default.)

Can you post a cut-down version of your project?

I think you’re conflating Space Size with Justification of Staff Spacing.

If you look in the bottom left corner of the page, you’ll see a percentage value. This shows how vertically full the page is.
At Library > Layout Options > Vertical Spacing > Vertical Justification there are two thresholds, again using percentages, that govern the way the pages are vertically spaced.

Dorico’s not altering the Space Size of the first system, here; it’s clocking that when you alter the Space Size of the second system, the page as a whole is no longer sufficiently full to meet the threshold for justifying staves and systems.

If it’s not doing what you want it to do, change these thresholds.

See this bit of the manual for examples.
