How do I get VST instruments to respond to the score editor?

I have imported XMLs with lots of score markings I can see on the score editor, but are not effecting the playback of my VSTi besides note # and length (not even dynamics have an effect). I tried mapping the dynamics to the appropriate CC and I get nothing.
How do I get this to work?
