How To Access Playing Techniques on Pitched Percussion Instruments

I am watching the Percussion & Drum set Notation in YouTube - Discover Dorico channel. Dorico 5 pro on PC.
I added Chimes and it plays on Halion 7 the Tubular Bells.
That instrument has a key switch E3 that Mutes the Bells.
However in Setup -Chimes Player - Chimes Instrument the option to Edit (an then add ) playing techniques is not available, it’s grayed out.
The same happens for the Glockenspiel and the Xylophone, I cannot access and add playing techniques to activate key switches for those instruments.
Thanks

You don’t need to add any playing techniques to the instrument itself. For pitched instruments, you add playing techniques to the music using the Shift+P popover (or the Playing Techniques panel on the right-hand side in Write mode).

To actually play back, though, there needs to be a corresponding entry in the expression map used for that instrument, which you can see in the Track Inspector panel on the left-hand side in Play mode when you select the track corresponding to that instrument.

You can edit the expression map used for the instrument, or indeed create a new one from scratch if need be.

Note that of course simply adding something to the expression map will not magically make it play back: the expression map needs to match up with the capabilities of the patch for which it is intended to be used.

Thanks Daniel I created a map for the Tubular bells and Added “Base” and selected Damp and assigned note E3 which is the note that mutes the bell sustained ring. Then I selected the map I created “Chimes - Mute E3” for the instrument in Play and after selecting some notes I added “Damp” to the Pitched Percussion Expressions on the right and placed it over some notes and nothing happens.
Actually something happens the first note now does not play but the rest do and are never damped/stopped ringing as if I input the note E3 on the score.
Oh well, maddening…

Hi. I just checked out on this. What you are talking about is the Iconica Sketch instrument for Tubular Bells. It has this E3 stop key, that would act as the damping pedal on a real instrument. The problem here is it cannot be used in the context of an expression map, since it has to be used in a totally different time frame than the Note on or Note off MIDI times. It’s actually very easy when playing on a keyboard to activate it in a quite musical way. The only way I see it used is by adding a staff (Add staff below- with some E3 notes played at appropriate moments — that’s the first flow/system in the picture below — and once it’s all programmed, hide that staff or delete it (the musical content will remain, it’s a kind of bug that is quite useful in those situations, I guess that’s why it’s has not been corrected, it turned out to be a feature — that is the second flow/system)

Thanks Marc, after experimenting I got to the same conclusion although not understanding the reason as well as you describe it here, it makes sense.
