How to add the © symbol on iPad

Hello, if you are working on the iPad without external keyboard you might run into the problem how to input the copyright symbol © into Dorico’s Copyright field.
It is possible (even if you don’t find that symbol on the internal keyboard). I’ll paste the instructions, how to achieve this:
—————
Follow these steps to type the copyright© symbol on iPhone and iPad:

  1. Copy the copyright © symbol from here or any other site on the web.

  2. Open the Settings app and go to General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.

  3. Tap the plus button.

  4. Under Phrase, paste the copied copyright © symbol.

  5. Under Shortcut, type a short, relevant word.

For example, for the copyright symbol, you can put copr as the shortcut. Copr isn’t a real word; thus, whenever you type copr, it will automatically enter the © symbol. You can use a real word, like copyright, as the shortcut, but then every time you type copyright, your iPhone/iPad will automatically replace the word with the © symbol. So, it’s best to use a short, random string of alphabets as the shortcut.

  1. Tap Save.

  1. Open a text field like the Project Info window in Dorico on iPad and type the shortcut (copr, or whatever you entered in step 5). The moment you tap the Space bar, it will change to the appropriate symbol (© in this example).

This is how you can use Text Replacement to type special characters and symbols on your iPhone and iPad. Further, note that Text replacement syncs via iCloud to all your Apple devices like other iPhones, iPad, and Mac. So, whenever you type the shortcut on your Mac, it will also enter the special character there.

An alternative method is to switch to the emoji keyboard and [1] go to the section marked with a musical note, a percentage sign, and two other symbols. [2] Find the © symbol and tap it.

:grinning::+1:t2:©

Thats another good solution Steven.
Notice though that this way you will get an image: ©️ - and not the font your Dorico project uses ©

ps: interesting, this forum software replaces the emoji ©️ in the first line with a font character…

Not an image; it’s still a text character, but an emoji variant:
© is U+00A9
©️ is the same plus U+FE0F, a variation selector

There is also U+FE0E to force the plaintext version of the preceding codepoint.

Though it is a 2-byte sequence, unfortunately you can’t just delete the second character and get the plain version; they delete as one.

Of course if you have an external keyboard with your iPad, just type Option-G as we’ve been doing on Mac since 1984!
