How to change tempo permanently?

I can’t figure out how to make it so every time I use playback the tempo is what I set it to. I’ve tried the slider after pressing Command-4 to be in Play Mode. But it is temporary.

I’ve also tried changing the bpm in the slide out tempo tool on the right (after pressing Command-9 to make it visible). I thought it would “stick”, but it doesn’t seem to.

What simple thing am I doing wrong?
Thank you.

The tempo input you are talking about is moreless only to temporarily try out something.

This is a scoring software. If you want a permanent tempo, add a tempo sign via Shift+t to your score at the right place.

@Estigy, OK – that makes sense. Thanks!

I did do that yesterday, but then deleted it thinking there must be some other way.

Once I’ve done that, how to I hide it so it does not show on the printed score?

Open the property lane (bottom part of the window) and look for a checkbox that says something like “hide …” (Sorry, not currrently in front of Dorico).

Found it: clicked Command-8 to get to the bottom panel (I like not using the mouse!) and then unticked “Text shown”.

But then … it had no impact on playback tempo.

Oh, I got it to work – after inserting the tempo marker via Shift-T and then saving, I closed and re-opened the file – then it stuck.

Thank you, @Estigy!

Maybe you had the tempo override set at the top of the window?

Maybe … I don’t even know what / where that is…

That is the correct way to enter tempo (and tempo changes) in Dorico. You need not enter any text if you don’t need any. eg. shift-t q=60 will set tempo to 60bpm and show the appropriate metronome mark. Similarly shift-t h=30 will set the same tempo, but show a half=30 metronome mark.

@Janus, Thank you.

Now I have a corollary issue: once I’ve unticked the tempo marker, how can I select it to make it visible again? I’ve tried all kinds of things like Show Signposts, View System Track, but they obviously are not the way to do it.

If it (still) exists, but isn’t showing anything, there will be a signpost.

@Mark_Johnson, Of course, you’re right! I had seen that, but when I double clicked on it (as I usually do), the text box behind it opened up and I saw it and thought, “That’s not what I want.” Now I see that even with a double click it did open the bottom panel where I can tick and untick it – I didn’t see that before. And if I only single click, that bottom panel with the options for that item is the only thing that is invoked.

Got it!

what’s the right place. I placed the cursor on the score above the clef at the beginning of the piece and shift T and nothing happened.

Make sure you actually select something- the time signature or a note where you want the tempo marking.
