I can’t create a quarter note tuplet with the first quarter note as a rest instead of a note. I don’t find any answer in the forum or manual how to do it, so please help me out.
With your tuplet note value selected (quarter notes), create the tuplet first, and then use the right arrow key to advance the caret to the next quarter note position to input where you want you first note. Dorico handles rests automatically (in the absence of notes), so you don’t need to actually create one.
Also you can look at the grid settings to adjust the settings of the caret grid (orange lines above) which will dictate behavior of the right/left arrow keys.
FWIW, in situations like this I find it easier to use the space key instead of the arrow keys. The space key will advance the caret by the currently selected duration, while the arrow keys move the caret by the current grid setting. So if you have a quarter note duration selected, and you enter triplet mode, pressing space will advance the caret to the second quarter of the triplet.
This feels more direct to me (advancing by the exact duration I want), but either method works.
Yes, also perfectly valid as a different way to approach it. I generally prefer arrow keys since I often change my rhythmic value while my grid remains a little more consistent (I don’t change it as often), and the grid is what shows above the caret for visual ease, so I find left/right advancement by the grid to be my style - especially for syncopated music where you want to keep a quarter note for input, but place it an off beat 8th note position (rather than change to 8th and back to quarter, or hit spacebar and then go back with left arrow). Obviously many ways to skin a cat so whatever works!
Thank you guys for your quick and helpful answer, I have now created a tuplet as I wanted to do.
