How to delete rest shift notes left?

I have searched the web. I have read the forms. I still can’t figure out how to Delete a rest. I want to delete a Rest and shift notes left.
How do I do this?

Select the rest
Turn on Insert mode (press letter “I”)
Press Delete or Backspace
Turn off Insert mode

Or, if this is the example, select all of the notes that you want to move left and, with the rhythmic grid set to quavers, hold option+command (option+control on pc?) and hit left arrow.
