How to do some bizarre percussion notation?

Hi folks. I have an assignment where I need to produce markup like the attached image. Percussion has quarter notes that look like large Xs without stems. Some of the Xs are inside parentheses. Any ideas how I can implement this (bizarre) notation?

Recent versions of Dorico can certainly hide stems and can also apply custom noteheads (beyond those that can be generally defined in a custom percussion kit).
