When I play sax I like my sheet music in the key of F#. I first create my music as midi in Cubase and import it into Dorico. Sometimes Dorico will interpret this as Gb, and the sheet music will be generated in that key. Then I have to go through and change most of the notes by hand, so the music looks the way I am used to. Is there a way to solve this, so Dorico generates the music as Fsharp (instead of Gflat)? Is this something I need to do in cubase before I export? Or something I can do within Dorico?
One can transpose the entire part down by a diminished second to change the part from Gb to F#.
I know F-sharp and G-flat are the same note. In my mind I like to think of it as F-sharp. I’m trying to figure out how to get Dorico to give me sheet music in the key of F# (instead of G-flat).
Wow - that worked - thank you!
What does it mean to transpose down a diminished second? I appreciate it.
Gb to F would be a minor second interval. So the next step/denomination for the interval, if you go from Gb to F#, is “diminished” second.
Another example:
C-E is a major third
C-Eb is a minor third
C#-Eb is a diminished third
In F#-major an F# to G# would be a Major second. An F# to G-natural would be a minor second and an F# to Gb would be a diminished second (enharmonic unisons). Kudos to @Christian_R who got there ahead of me.
