How to enable the Output Level Knob of a UR816C when using Optical Out

Hi all. I have a TOSLINK cable plugged into the Optical Out of my UR816C which sends my main audio mix to the digital inputs of my studio speakers. I have setup my UR-C software settings so that S/PDIF Output L/R is set to Mix 1 L/R and Line Output 1 L/R is set to S/PDIF L/R. And finally I have Output Level Knob ticked:

But whatever I set Line Output 1 L/R to, nothing seems to enable the front volume knob. The only way to change the volume going into the speakers is to manually adjust the Main output fader of the UR-C.

Anyone have any suggestions for how to get the output knob to control the level of Digital Out in this scenario?

The output knob is just a potentiometer, that’s not usable in the digital domain. Its position is after the D/A conversion.

Thank you for that. Not trying to argue with you - you are probably right, but I am intrigued by the option of using S/PDIF as the option for Line Out 1…I wonder why that would be an option there (where it seems you can use the output knob) & how that would be used?:

Did you try to find the information in the manual?
It states that the output level knob controls the Line Outputs.

Thank you and you are correct. It does say that. I’d love to know what the S/PDIF In L/R option means for the Line Output section. I still feel like there should be some way of assigning the Digital Output to the Output Level Knob…

Can anyone from Steinberg advise if this is a feature that could theoretically be added in a future version of the UR-C software? The Genelec speakers I have connected sound so much better using the digital cabling, & it seems a shame if the UR816C loses the ability to use the volume knob when sending digital audio out.

Sorry, I’m out.

Nice idea, I wonder if it might work in future? FYI, I have an older Tascam US-2020 which shares some similarities with the UR816c. It also has SPDIF out (which sounds nice with my speakers), but it has no output knob at all, for analogue or otherwise. I have got used to relying on the software mixer settings and ensuring they are in a good state when I shut down the software (as the unit remembers the last-used settings when the software is not running).
